I'd like to know, also, if there are reasonably priced alternatives for chillers. All I've seen are incredibly expensive.

whoooo.... 1st time ever my tank got down to 18 today! looks like winters def setting in already. flats freezing. Good for the little guys.... not good for me Brrrrrrrr........

Re: Straw Pole: What temperature is your Axolotl tank right now? (or whenever you left the house?)

My tank is around 15 at the mo, I think 19 is the highest it has ever got to. Is 15 ok or too cold? I always thought it was ok, but most peoples seem to be warmer than 15?

My axolotl tanks are currently sitting at around 5c (41f) and they are still laying eggs. Your tank temperature is a good temp to be at.

my lil ones tank is now at 19c after a really hot day here which produced a very freaked out new owner with a subsequent move for Ashba into the kitchen where the aircon reaches.... not to mention the freezer blocks stolen from my sons lunch box as a new semi-permanent decorations..... its going to be a LONG summer here.... and it hasn't even started yet!

Thanks Justin

Now we're in the grips of another ice snap my setup doesn't get above 12 degrees C... especially during the day - we're all out so the house gets a bit cooler... They seem ok with it but could I add some warm water to make them a bit more comfortable?

Re: Straw Pole: What temperature is your Axolotl tank right now? (or whenever you left the house?)

They are prefectly comfortable in 12c. No need to worry.

At the moment mine is 18c, in the summer it does increase but ice bottles seem to keep it at 18-20c
(thank god for brittsh weather!)

I'm rather jealous of all these cold temperatures...
My guys are currently in their 20L tank which is fluxuating between 20-23 (in air conditioning!!)... Which is good, considering their normal 4ft tank (Which I've just put 4 guppies into to stop the filters dying from lack of poop) is at twenty seven (With a massive fan going...)

I'm in the process of setting up my first axolotl tank and the water temperature has been at about 18c during the day & 16c at night. I haven't gotten them yet but I'm glad the temperature is in the right range. :D

Just for the record, we had some record-breaking cold weather this winter. My axie pond is in a semi-heated room, but the room went down to near-freezing. The water temp in the pond was around 3C (38F) for a couple of days. No problem for the axolotls.

Under normal winter conditions, their temp is often around 10C (50F) for extended periods. They continue to eat (though not as much) and seem happy enough. A few days ago I found some eggs, even though they are still at roughly that temp.

Just wanted to add to how great fans work.
I've built a rig with one 12cm computer fan and it lowers the temp to 17 degrees Celsius from ambient 23 degrees room temperature :D. Thats 6 degrees, and I reckon about 5 come from the fan and 1 from the holes Ive drilled into the lid.

I can really recommend a computer fan if you know anything about electrics as its a very cheap and effective solution .

Woke up this morning and my tank was right around 8C (as was the rest of the house!). The sals seemed quite pleased. The snakes, not so much (don't worry, they have their own heating system independent of the house temperature).

just noticed its a nice bell curve in here..

Sadly my axos are hanging out at 74-76 stable. Damn hawaii weather!

Because it's still stinking hot here in sunny Queensland (Aust) I'm struggling to keep the temp below 25 deg C, even with ice blocks.

I've been pricing chillers, but at $600+ (AU$) I seriously can't afford that right now.

Try a coolworks microchiller. Its basically the coolworks iceprobe system built into a hang on filter. I'm waiting for one to come in... once I get it I'll tell you how it goes.

Oh best bit is its only $179 from marine depot... and you get free postage!

Great idea!! Unfortunately I can't use any type of hang on system with my tank. I have a glass rim that goes all around the top. DOH!!

Glass rim? How big? I have to use the little plastic cover holder things in order to keep my current hang on filter straight. So long as the rim isn't huge this unit should be alright for you.

If not you could try for an actual iceprobe. I've seen some people set it up so its sitting at the top of the tank with only the probe bit in the water... rather than drilled through the wall of the tank.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
