Tank update--
bamequnu.jpg

Got some mondo grass today. Hoping Stanley won't kill it. Lol. Long freaking day, so I turned on the light for the second time since I set it up, and its looking good. Nice and relaxing. Gonna order some moss balls and some sort of floater so I can have the light on more often. As you can see Stanley is hiding in his cave, away from the light. Haha

Instead of a tank, I now have an indoor pond! I'm still doing some finishing steps (like slowly cutting the tarp back), but I'm nearly done!. Ted (leucistic) and Melvin (wild type) just moved in this morning!

mondo grass actually isn't a fully aquatic plant. Chain pet stores sell it that way for god knows why. It will survive for a few months, but slowly die. I would take it out.

If you want a plant that has a grassy look I would suggest either:

Small: Micro sword
Medium: corkscrew vals
Large: jungle vals (large and tall)

That's really cool! How are you filtering it?

My 15 gallon. Currently holding my Melanoid. I am going to fill the bottom a bit more as soon as I get more rocks. :)

This is an amazing thread!!! It's so helpful to see how others have set up their tanks and the feedback provided. I'm currently in the process of cycling a new tank and can not wait to get a couple axies!!! As soon as the tank is set up completely, I'll post a pic! So far it's a little bare :)

I have the same thermometer as most of you (it's the floating one with the suction cup) but mine has never stuck it just falls off do I need to put it in without water in the tank?
at the moment I just have it floating

Does our tank look okay? :) we have fake plants and a bare bottom tank as our axies are still quite small we didnt want to put sand in yet.

This is my tank for my albino Vimes! It has medium grain sand and that light is definitely not on all the time. There's a cave behind that big blue plant and i made the smaller cave with the turtle balancing on that cave and the orange rock. There should be an orange skull in there but he knocks it over constantly so it's probably behind the blue plant

Do you think river rocks would be okay to use in our tank? I'd obviously boil them to get rid of parasites etc and I read you should test them with vinegar to see if they fizz?

Sounds ok as long as you sterilize them good. Haven't heard of the vinegar test, but it does make sense.

The vinegar test shows if the rock is limestone. Limestone could affect the Gh. Though as axies aren't very picky about the Gh it wouldn't matter very much. Infact in Finland many people choose to put limestone in their tanks because the water is often a bit on the soft side.

Made another cave and rearranged the water babies home :p excuse the tank guard in the corner. She loves watching them swim.

I just added sand so it's a bit cloudy, but I added some more plants and re-arranged my rock hides.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail. Had a question that I just want to be sure of. My marbled newt is a little over a year old and has started to develop and I noticed that he is starting to swell a little below his abdomen. I guess I’d like to know if they are his testes or if I need to be concerned.
