Needless to say I'm fairly certain that there is no safe way to make them that color...

Yeah, all the methods that I read about colouring fish (and now axolotls) are so bad for them. Extreme stress, liver problems, skin issues etc. Those poor guys =( I've seen it done to fish before and now I'm afraid someone going to get it in their mind to tattoo axolotls on top of this dye job...

I'm on my phone and can't do a in-depth googly search for links with axolotls but I found tons for artificial coloring of fish. Here's an article that goes into some methods. I'm guessing the third method was used on those axolotls.

Fish Death By Dyeing

I came across that one before when I saw a posting on tattooed fish. I just never saw it on axies, though I suppose that's a good thing.

The best luck I've had with people like this is to pretend I know less than they do and say something like "I heard on a bunch of websites that you aren't supposed to use gravel. Is this true? Why/why not?". It isn't 100% effective but frequently, in trying to answer my question, they end up doing a bit of research and educating themselves. I can only hope that, in the situations that don't go as well, they tell me I'm wrong because they're too embarrassed to admit their mistake, but go and switch to sand or bare bottom anyway.

Uhmm... someone just posted a video of their ( un metamorphosed) axolotl walking on their counter.... they think theyre 'training' it..

I saw that too, absolutely disgusting. And she goes answers her friends questions like its completely normal for them to be out of water. They may be classed as amphibians but axolotls are purely water you stupid girl! WOMAN, PUT HIM BACK IN THE TANK.

I think people need to pass a test in order to take care of anything other then themselves(pets, children etc..) its absolutely disgusting the things people will do.. Are they either stupid or ignorant? Or do they think its fun to torture an animal? Or cool to dye them or to make them do something that is not in their nature? Would they put their child in a room full of pills and expect their child will live? The whole " they havent swallowed gravel in two years so they are perfectly okay on gravel" is like saying my baby cant get into the child proof covers onmy pills so I will leave them in the crib.. I am sorry if this offends anyone or is a little harsh, i do agree a baby may be more precious to some but in my opinion if you are risking the life of a living creature, out of pure ignorance, they are allowed to be compared.

I saw that too :(

I agree with Alkyhalide. In my opinion, my pets are my family and they deserve as much love and respect as my family and friends. A life is a life regardless of species and should be recognised as such and valued equally. Pets rely on us to care for them. We bring them into our lives and the least we can do is respect them and care for them properly.

HAHAHAHA!!! "Are they either stupid or ignorant?" Nope! Their both!!!

One thing I have learned is that there will always be people who don't know how to take care of their pets, and we can try to educate them but they may be too ignorant and/or stupid, and not take our advice.
Though it is definitely infuriating!

Unfortunately all we can really do is educate the people who are willing to listen and take good care of their pets. Its too bad we cant take away their axolotl keeping privilages :mad::mad:
