GRRR. People.

The "Canabalistic stage" is a marketing ploy developed by a certain online seller of axolotls to scare people into buying from him. There's no such thing. Yes younger axolotls are more likely to bite each other, but when given enough space and food, that risk is minimized.

I'd be interested to know who that seller is...

i always understood was the cannabilistic stage was that time where they were more likely to nip each other if not enough space or food. I mean its even natural for an adult to do it if ones foot or tail is to close to food+ another axolotls mouth. I mean my adults have niped each other. One time I was feeding them and toothless grabbed nikes foot and would not let go! I started freaking out(not like they can hear "NO dont do that!! Let go!!" But you know lol) but no injuries came from it. Except for lotl domino once toothless let go. A whole tank of lotls freaking out.

I think its just when they are younger injuries are more likely to happen. I like the reference because it just helps new owners know that you do have to watch it when they are younger because limbs will be eaten. But not to scare people, more like be aware that it is natural and not the end of the world

Today in the instagram axolotl world :someone feeding their axolotl pinkie mice, and another that keeps fish that *surprisingly * had her axolotls gills (referred to as hair -.- ) eaten off by fish. Posted in a lighthearted manner. Sigh

Wow, I haven't heard of pinkies being fed to an axolotl before... Not sure they would be particularly great at catching mice in the wild...

People just don't get it :(

And now a 'specialist' claiming gravel is okay and being kept with fishes (not feeders) is okay. And then she commented on my picture of Stanley telling me he is overweight. I hate people

Stanley is overweight? Omg.. Stanley is like a perfect weight..

I thought so too! I don't feed him too often, I think he's perfect. She's hurting Stanley's self esteem! Lol.

People are arrogant. They want to think they are right, like all of us. But after you give advice she tries to insult you? That's just plain wrong. Don't worry Emmyk, Stanly ( the one in you picture I assume? ) has what I think is the ideal weight. He is actually one of the most healthy and attractive looking axis I have ever seen. Tell this lady that she should do a little research, maybe on this site, and see what she finds. I wish I had a Instagram account, I would love to see how many people I could get to come to this site, and gawk at all the info . But seriously, its great that you are at least trying to help these people out, even if they are stubborn/selfish/mean/arrogant ( or all ate the same time ). :)

Was it @lucyywxo's post and @maisiees? My wife told them they were idiots, and the latter one claimed to be a European specialist. Lol

I believe the 'cannibalistic stage' is a myth. It's true that axies will chomp each other, but this can happen when any axie is hungry, regardless of age and size. They also bite when annoyed like when someone gets in their 'personal space', so space is an important factor too.

Axies are opportunists. Given a worm and an axolotl larva and asked to choose, a larger axie wouldn't care which on he ate as long as he ate something. In fact he'd probably eat both.

This is also my experience. I have had up to a 8 2" larvae together in a 60L tank and no casualties. The only probelm I had was as they got bigger and hungrier and became overcrowded they started snapping at each other. I thinned out the crowd and upped their food, problem solved.

I observed some "accidental cannibalism" among my juveniles two days ago. One is sitting in front of a little heap of bloodworms (dead ones), happily taking the odd bite then meditating while he swallows it. Another creeps towards the bloodworms from behind the first... closer, closer... and then SNAP! He attempts to grab a worm, but unfortunately grabs the first axie's arm instead, because it's standing in with the worms. And off it comes. I think a lot of the cannibalism is simply because they are too dumb to realise what it is they are biting!

It is sometimes very frustrating. There was one who posted a picture of their lotl and in brackets put please do not give me any advice on how to take care of my axolotl, I dont need any and for your guys' information I tale very good care of my pets and dont nee any help and i replied i wont give you advice but i assume if you had to put that in brackets then you know what you are doing is wrong and you just chose to ignore it. And she blocked me i think because now i cant see any of her pictures

This girl who keeps her axolotl on gravel has the nerve to tell me my 20 gallon is too small for Stanley. I kindly accepted the advice. Haha

Well isnt she nice :p i would rather keep an axolotl in a 20gallon tank with no gravel then a 50gallon with gravel. I would never critise the size of ones tank as long as the tank had all the required aspects for an axolotl to live. If you can create enough room/hides and keep water quality good then whatever size tank you feel fit.. Mine you dont use like a 5gallon or fish bowl.. Obviously i still adv on minimum tank size. I mean i acknowledge that 50 gallons for 5 adults isnt ideal but i am slowly making it work until i can get space for a bigger one
