GRRR. People.

ONCE AGAIN. there's this person on instagram that is keeping their axolotl on lots and lots of gravel. And they're feeding minnows FROM THE RIVER. disease? Parasites? Anyone? And they're all heated because I'm trying to tell them what to do, but I'm just trying to help....

And another person told me they're SUPPOSED to go on gravel. -.-

I actually saw this on instagram!! I was looking up under the hashtag #axolotl and found that picture. She was all angry for trying to teach her how to look after her "baby". She has no clue whatsoever! It angers me when people think it's fine because they haven't had a problem. YET

Exactly! I was just trying to save the poor thing:(

You can only do so much unfortunately :( thumbs up for trying though :)

Oh my :nono:. I cant believe people think that is ok, I mean even conventional wisdom would suggest that that is to little space! When people do stuff like that it makes one wonder what else there doing wrong, picking them up and holding them for a minute, yah never know with those people. Hhuuuhhh.................

I feel aweful, before I started researching axies myself, a staff member brought one in to work as a pet. She kept it in a tiny tank (I'm guessing about 15L) with no hide or plants, a very bubbly filter that made current, and didn't regulate the temperature (We had some days where it reached over 35d c in the shop). Not to mention, uncycIed tank, and only changed water once every second week. The only good thing is she was told not to use gravel so she didn't. I wish I knew then what I do now.
The poor little fella died, and she was devastated.
I don't blame her entirely - the LFS person who sold her the set-up gave her wrong 'advice' which made this little creature live in misery. If only 'experts' would stop giving false information!

Today on instagram: an axolotl in a fishbowl and a VERY rude axolotl breeder who is keeping all her juvies together (in the cannibalistic stage). She was so mean to.me. hmph.

Haha yeah i follow that girl on instagram, she doesnt like taking advice from anyone. She does however love her axies and the babies seem okay, theyre not on gravel or starving or anything so thats a plus :)

That's true.

Personally I've raised juvies all together... and they don't go through a 'canibalistic' stage if they are offered plenty of food. I feed mine on a constant diet of live blackworms, and never once have I had babies develop missing limbs or gills. It just depends on how you raise the babies.

That's impressive. I know I tried to offer my youngest axie more food when she started being nippy with her tank mate, but she wouldn't even take it. I wouldn't be able to pay my axolotls to consistently eat two days in a row.

Well axolotls only eat when they are hungry, so what I do is put several ounces of live blackworms in at a time, and over several days, as they get hungry they eat the worms instead of eachother, replenish worms as necessary. :)

That's good! I'm glad it worked out for you. I was just asking her if she was going to seperate them and telling her there was a cannibalistic stage and she went mad on me and started accusing me of not knowing my stuff

The can and will try to eat eachother given half a chance though, don't get me wrong. They just aren't as likely to do it if they have easier food to eat lol

I've posted this before, but who wants to see an axolotl's natural habitat? And WILD axolotls? And a breeding programme in Mexico? And Nick Baker?
Axolotl : Documentary on the Bizarre Mexican Salamander - YouTube

As for the substrate debate, I have slates that I don't silicone down so I can move them and clean under them. My babies love the cool feel on their feet, and all their hides are made of slate too, except for one.

I went off sand after I saw impacted babies. I just wouldn't want to take the risk.

This is one of the reasons I stay out of the instatweet and twittergram scene. It's embarrassing to me that I share the same species with these people.

"#Axolotl #2Gals #Cute #Selfy #Colorful #Gravel #MileyCyrus"

I scowl every time I look to the right and catch a glimpse of ignorance that is the tween scene on her phone. >.<;

The last bit I meant about my GF's phone* I couldn't edit my last post.

Also the girl with those two axies in the fishbowl needs a swift kick in the teeth! Look at the **** that is around them! She could easily afford 10 gallons until they are large enough to need 20+! That's like having thousands of dollars in the bank but being forced to live in a cardboard box. . . Makes me angry that they don't care enough about their pets to friendly advise from people, then turn around and call it her baby. . .

SMH.

Sorry about the image links too. They won't go away. >.<;

I believe the 'cannibalistic stage' is a myth. It's true that axies will chomp each other, but this can happen when any axie is hungry, regardless of age and size. They also bite when annoyed like when someone gets in their 'personal space', so space is an important factor too.

Axies are opportunists. Given a worm and an axolotl larva and asked to choose, a larger axie wouldn't care which on he ate as long as he ate something. In fact he'd probably eat both.

This is also my experience. I have had up to a 8 2" larvae together in a 60L tank and no casualties. The only probelm I had was as they got bigger and hungrier and became overcrowded they started snapping at each other. I thinned out the crowd and upped their food, problem solved.

My understanding of the "cannibalistic stage" has always been that they're simply growing very quickly, so their demand for food is much greater so they're more likely to try nipping each other. I've never considered a stage in which they actively want to eat each other >.>

Bah, semantics
