Paedomorphic C. ensicauda

Wow that's amazing that it hasen't morphed in 2 years!
you certainly have a Paedomorphic C. ensicauda .Has it grown any longer?

That tail is insanely huge, I bet it is one fast newt when swimming. I have never seen a tail that huge in comparison to the body on an newt of that type. Keep us posted and breed that thing and send me some!

Hi Josh. I haven't measured it in a while. It's doesn't hang around the front of the tank for long, though I did manage to get this shot of it today:

Hi Jeff. Yes, you should see it go

It gets startled easily and takes off so fast that sometimes I fear it might jump out of the tank!

Hi William.

I've been hearing "the gills look smaller" on this forum for over 2 years now so it raises no alarm bells anymore
lol.gif

That may or may not be the case, or yes, it may just be that they look smaller depending on the angle of the pic. Who knows, the gill size may even fluctuate depending on the oxygen content and the temperature of the water. My axoltls' gills certainly do.

Do you think this thing will be able to breed? It does seem to have a bit of girth in that last photo but it may have just had a large meal. But then we'd have to assume it is a female first.

I am convinced it is a paedomorph or at least will not lose those gills anytime soon...that tail has done me in!

The gills have pretty much been looking like that for a long time now William but they sure are small

Here's some photos from today:

So Tim, I think you may have me paranoid. All of my C. cyanurus morphs still have small amounts of gills left on them-- some of them for a few weeks now. I'm just worrying about having too many 'abnormalities' in one room... How did your paedomorphic one start?

Hi Scott. The newt's doing fine, and still hasn't morphed. At this rate, I doubt it will. It hasn't grown much in size, if at all, since I last posted about it. It's still being kept alone. One of these days, I'd like to introduce a potential mate.

Sorry, Justin, I didn't see your post until now. How are those cyanurus doing now? Mine never went on land, so it just started out as a larvae and grew bigger and bigger

WOW.

This is the first time I've seen this thread...how COOL! Congrats!

Wow, Tim. I haven't seen this thread before either. I have a few questions. I hope these aren't stupid questions but, if you had two species of adults in the tank this newt came from, is it possible that it's a result of interspecies breeding?

And, have you tried introducing a mate yet? Maybe it would prefer an axolotl mate!!!

(joke).

wow tim, i havent really seen anything unusual and interesting like that
happy.gif
hopefully you can get this reluctant boy(girl?)to breed. THat would be something im sure everyone on this thread would like to see/hear about, am i right or am i right! lol just joshin ya, but yeah its really cool.

Hi guys. Yeah, I'd like to be able to breed it someday but I haven't introduced a mate yet as I wasn't sure it was sexually mature. Seeing as some 3 years have now passed, maybe it's about time to try

Ali, I can't say for sure that it's not a result of interspecies breeding because I recall I did have some Cynops pyrrhogaster in the same tank as the Cynops ensicauda popei adults. It's unlikely but not impossible as interspecies breeding has been accomplished in the laboratory (if you can call that "breeding"). I've never seen a picture of a newt resulting from that, but would very much like to.

I've been invited to contribute a little something about this to a Japanese herpetological journal because whatever it is, there's no record of any such thing occuring with this species.
