Question: Cycling my tank

If this is impossible should I take another testing and post the pics? I just am wanting to be on the right track.

It sounds impossible??? XD Sure, pics would be nice.

Here is a retest with similar results. The nitrite might be closer to 1 ppm now that I look at it.

Well I'll be darned XD It'll still take a while for the nitrite to go down, keep at it. :>

So I'm looking good? And I haven't tested the pH as you told me it should stay consistent?

How about the murkiness of the water? Is that good or bad?

Yep, looking darn good for four days LOL Yes your PH shouldn't change as long as the sand is PH neutral n stuff.

The water could be murky from the driftwood or the sand settling, I doubt it has anything to do with your cycle.

Great! Thank you so much for the help so far I hope I can get the completed cycle soon and I can get my critters in :) - by chance do you have a breeder that you would recommend me to get an axie from? I want a great axie as this will be a journey having him as a pet.

Sure I can recommend a breeder, Margie! http://www.caudata.org/forum/f49-ad...569-juvenile-axolotls-shipping-pick-up-3.html She has some spawn growing out now that should be ready by the time your tank fully cycles.

Her animals are lovely and they come packed with care -! Would recommend :)

I should be getting my chiller today or tomorrow and am hoping the install is a breeze (hehe). I had a quick question - I was wondering what I should keep my temperature at? I planned on setting the chiller to 16C and so that once it hit 17C it would kick on....Any thoughts?

That sounds about right to me. Hope the instillation is easy for ya lD

Quick update:

The chiller is set to arrive tomorrow I am excited. I ran my tests today and here are the results:

Ammonia - .5

Nitrite - 2

Nitrate - 5

Input is welcome, not sure why the nitrate dropped.

The nitrate test is really finncky, in truth it may not have dropped you just got a different reading. In the API kit the nitrate tends to be the most inaccurate.

Makes sense as it requires the most variables for potential mistake. I have yet to see my ammonia get that high but am happy to see it at a higher level today than yesterday. I am going to dose it again but an contemplating putting the frozen brine shrimp in a Mason jar with some holes through a zip lock bag to possibly avoid mess. Does this make sense or should I just not mind the mess and do a water change/cleanup?

I actually put the fish food in a jar covered with cut up panty hose over it while cycling my tank so it wouldn't get all over. You have to sorta stir it up every now and then tho- or the ammonia will just stay in the jar I learned.

Great idea! I am going to give it a try and see how it works. Hope this kicks the cycle into full effec!

Don't get too excited it'll still take weeks for the nitrite to go down xD that always took me the longest.

Is there any need for daily or weekly water changes since there are no fish? Also since my chiller comes in today, once I have it installed, should I crank up the heat to 80-82F to help culture the bacteria?

I never do water changes when the tank is cycling so long as there aren't any fish in the tank. From what I understand the higher temps will help to decrease the time it takes to cycle but how much I do not know for sure. It'll still take awhile.

JJ - Thank's for checking in. I am curious about this as well - I hope someone can fill us in with a solid answer. I understand it will take some time - I plan to keep posting results daily as a type of log until I get my axies. (if this is the wrong section to do so/is prohibited; please let me know)
