Cycling - am I on the right track?

make sure whatever you are using to dechlorinate the water is still effective. If yours went out of date you could just be stalling your tank every time you add water.

Thanks I didn't think of that just checked it though and it is in date

maybe try adding a cup of water from whereever your axolotls are being kept or next time you do a big water change for your axolotls just add the old water to the tank. I'm thinking that something might have just killed off the bacteria to the point it can't really get started again.

Ok I will try that too thanks

Ok just tested it ammonia 4.0 which is probably a bit less then before and nitrite 0.25 was about 0.5 before nitrates 0

Your nitrites have come down a lot!
We'll done.

Give it another 3 days or so and it should be perfect!

Why do I need to do water changes if there is not axies in there?

I haven't been doing water changes, should I be?

If you are doing a fishless cycle there is no need to do water changes until it is cycled when you will need to do water changes to bring the nitrate down to a safe level or if the PH is dropping as low PH can cause a cycle to crash. Although I have found small water changes have helped move it along a little when things seem to be slowing down.

Still no nitrate leads me to believe that it still has a little while yet before it is cycled. What test kit do you use?

That's what I thought, I am using the API liquid rest kit

I actually find that by doing water changes without having fish in the water, it helps speed the process up quite a bit.
This is completely up to you though, I am just saying what has worked for me.
Once I have brought the nitrites down slightly, I add some guppies in to help speed the cycle up.

I have found that this works for me for some reason. But I would suggest that you do whatever you feel is best - it is all a learning curve at the end of the day, and no animals are being harmed so follow your gut feeling :)

Thanks I will see what is is like tommorrow and might do that if it hasn't changed

I agree Leandrah that water changes can certainly help things along - this is what I found when cycling mine as well. It is not something that must be done during a fishless cycle though. I found a small water change helped when things slowed down.

Make sure you shake the second nitrate bottle really well and then once you have added both the nitrate liquids, shake the tube really well to ensure you are getting accurate nitrate readings.
