Question: Weak (malnourished?) axie, please advise!

Second poo since I got him last Monday - 2 more stones! How long can it take him to pass all of them do you think? Anything I can do to help?

If you look at his belly - there's still something right in the middle weighing him down, maybe another bigger stone?

So sorry he was so packed with gravel! Seems like he's doing a good job of passing them, I do hope if there is a larger one that he is able to pass it on his own.

You're doing a good job of caring for him, those pics are adorable! Axxie smiles are the best!

Thanks so much for the kind words, I try to do my best! Just wondering if there's any, hm, Axie laxative I could give him?;)) or just wait and let nature do it...

- these are some of the pebbles he was on - I kept them and put in my pot plants - but see how colour is peeling off them? Could he have a larger one like this and would it be poisonous?

I think as long as he's in fresh clean water, nature will take it's course...

I can't be 100% certain, but he seems to be doing a pretty good job on his own.

I'm rooting for him!

Fingers crossed!

My axies took a good couple of months to clear all the gravel from their digestive systems. Looks like he's managing fine on his own, I would leave him to it.

Can't help but post this:))) a minute ago - Babe after dinner:) life's good!

Another pooped out pebble to report - this time a fairly large one... Way too many for such a tiny tummy!
This is a great reminder to all of us to NEVER keep Axies on pebbles...

Yet another food/poop question, sorry!!:)

So since passing that large pebble Babe pooped on Sunday morning - and it was a perfectly normal poop with no stones. He still eats twice a day and is super active, climbs everywhere, snaps food out of my fingers etc.
but! Today is Thursday - and he hasn't pooped yet! He is happy and really fattened up in the last couple of weeks but is it normal that at first he was pooping almost every 3 days - and now it's been almost 5 and still nothing? I am paranoid, I know, but am still worried...
Now my big guys haven't pooped since Sunday either - they got a new 130l tank on Sunday so maybe they're just overwhelmed? I also reduced their feeding gradually to every second day - maybe that's the reason? They always pooped every 2-3 days before...

So that's my problem - 3 seemingly happy Axies - and no poop:))) feel stupid and worried:)

You do know that axies aren't that smart and sometimes eat their own poop....right?
(and yeah -EEEWWW!)

OMG!!!!!! You can't be serious?!:))))))) noooooooooooo:)))))))

 Poor little guy! And you are doing so well with him. Hopefully he passes all those rocks and comes out of all this okay. Cute little guy, and good for you for taking him on. Kids should not be given animals as "toys". My kids (ages 3&4) think all the pets here are theirs, but they do not get to touch, tease, scare, or handle anyone. The dogs are bomb-proof, so they are fair game, but not the salamanders, fish, hedgehog, cat, or anyone else. It's not fair to the animals, and teaches the kids that every animal has special needs and consideration.

I could not agree more!! When I was growing up mom always said 'if you have a pet, it's a huge responsibility, you need to understand that' - the first pet I got was a tortoise I found by accident near our country house - funny story - and I was meticulous with feeding and poop cleaning and all that (though she loved to poop on the carpet in the living room when we'd let her out to roam 'free range':)))) and yet - Mom was the one checking and re-checking, and always there in the background - and the same with our cats - mom always took care of them - and always reminded me that our family had 4 equal members (2 of which were cats:)))).

So I honestly don't get the whole 'I've now got too many kids, I don't have time to feed my pet' and 'it's a toy' thing. Don't get the pet at all then! Oh don't have that many kids, what are they going to learn from such attitude:( arrghh... this really makes me sad and angry. I'm such a 'Little Prince' believer - 'You are responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.' :))

Well, the good news - Babe looks very healthy now - and oh so different to 3 weeks ago! Has round belly, meatier legs and tail, very fluffy bright gills and swims and climbs all over happily - and he is SOOO friendly now, I haven't experienced that with my guys - he clings to the glass the minute I walk into the room, I don't even need to come right to the tank! And he does that for me, but not for my husband somehow - I must smell of food for him, but he comes over even when he's just eaten:)) I'm absolutely smitten - I feel that he loves me:)))))

some pics of him just a minute ago:)

I also need to ask for an advice - you guys all have much more experience than me!

So I got my new chiller and was hoping to install it sometime this or next week. Babe is in a separate tank now and I've had him for 3 weeks today; I don't think he has any health issues that could affect Axl & Mex.

Those guys are in a new 130L (110L of water atm) tank now, and my plan is to have them in there all together eventually and have a chiller running - as Friday already will be +25C outside! atm both tanks are 18.4-19.2C

Is it safe to put all three of them together? Axl & Mex are approx 24cm now and are chunky monkeys (see here http://www.caudata.org/forum/427172-post10.html)
Babe is about 15-18cm but he's still half their width (I'll put the pic from a week ago when I was redoing their tanks - them in tubs).

If I put a divider in - how shall I split the area (the tank is 90x 34 at the widest part, see pic of the temp setup)? How long should I have the divider for?

Feeding: Babe eats twice a day (perhaps I need to reduce it now??), Axl & Mex eat every second day now - would that be a problem - if they smell Babe's food would they try to steal it?

And lastly: I now have 3 apple snails in all tanks together (2 were a conscious purchase when I was cycling, the third came with Babe) - would you keep them all together with Axies or put in a separate tank? Here I'm more worried about bio-load - they've been cohabiting perfectly fine for 2 months now (and Babe possibly longer with his snail), so it's not an issue in terms of traumas, more of a space vs water quality? I run Aqua One Aquis 700 on the new 110L.
(and If I need to put the snails in the new tank - would you happen to know the minimum requirements for the three of them?)

Thanks heaps! :)

I would suggest putting in a divider if you put them in the same tank. The size difference between axies should be 5 cm max if they're kept together. Plus since the little one is still just getting better it wouldn't be very good for him if the bigger ones tried to snap at his feet/ gills etc. Even just stress from all that could make him worse or slow down his recovery.
I have a divider in my tank because one of mine is still a juvenile and the others are pretty much full grown. I feed the juvenile every day and the bigger ones don't seem to mind it. Actually they don't even seem to notice. And if they do notice and come to the divider to see what's going on then I just give them a little snack so they get a little something too.
I'd put the divider in so that the little one gets about 25-30 cm of the space and the other two 60-65 cm. It won't matter much because it'll only be until the little one has grown a bit.

If you can put the apple snails in another aquarium then I think you should do that. Even if nothing has happened yet doesn't mean it won't and it would just be safer for everyone to divide them. I've never kept them as it's illegal to sell them here but I believe they also like a bit warmer temperatures than axies.

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer Keiko, I think I'll follow your advice on everything:) re snails - I though I read somewhere that they live longer if kept at about 18C but I may be wrong! If they don't need a chiller - than I can have a small tank for them... I guess I'd need a bit of a research on the sizing;)))

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
