The colour named "Copper"

Very interesting thread gorgeous looking!

There seems to be a lot of what almost seems like superstitious belief surrounding " red genes" in the breeding of many species. We have it with copper/red elkhounds - no actual evidence they are more prone to genetic defects or weaknesses than the normal colour (almost without exception elkhounds are black/silver/grey combo) yet people still insist that red=bad

If you think about it we also extend that to humans - many believe that red = bad temperament.

Hi Jeroen,

Thanks for posting your copper photos and raising some interesting points. From what I've seen of European coppers they tend to all look very similar in markings and colour. For example the coppers that Jay sommers imported into the US look like very typical European coppers to me. The coppers you have posted photos of Jeroen look unusually light coloured so there clearly is some variation but not a lot.

Australia has many different albino axolotls that do not fit into the recognized albino categories but wether they are all copper axolotls is anyone's guess. If they are not white or golden albinos then they are all lumped together and called coppers. Many of these animals will occur when a copper is crossed with another copper or another albino.I've not tried a cross with a leucistic or melanoid.

Here are some of the variations of these animals over here and I also have some young coppers that look very similar to golden albinos only with a copper's eye. I'll post some photos soon. It is possible that the grey/purple individuals are axanthic coppers, but it's only a guess. Does anyone know roughly how long the European coppers have been around? 5,10,20 years?

Regards Neil

Photo 2 may look like a leucistic but if you look at it's eye it's actually an albino

Hello Neil, Yes i noticed allso a fiew diffrences in the europian copper and the coppers in australia. Like:

the pinkish underskin of the europian copper is with young age only good visable at the leggs and tail. ( you can see it on the pictures i posted.) When become adult and a fiew years old it totaly disaperes and the animal becomes darker, like you can see in this link: Axolotlgroepnederland - Axolotl Groep Nederland - Topic: eitjes koper koppel (1/2) and a slight lighter animal Axolotlgroepnederland - Axolotl Groep Nederland - Topic: Mijn kopers (4/5) these are indeed the tipical collors of the europian copper.

Allso the red eyes are not good visable with the naked eye.. you can see in good light they have a glimb of red but its just a tiny little and fast glimb. if you have glasses you would not see it lol.. Allso it seems that not evryone can capture the red eye on picture. It shure needs the right light flash and diafragma and stuff. So a lot of people like i did two, a year before did not believe they have some kind of reddish eyes. But i have made so many pictures of them now, and i have noticed the red glimp that i am shure they indeed have some reddish red eyes.

Well those are little diffrences but as we name them they are similar like you call olive/copper in Australia
*white eggs
*pinkish underskin
*red eyes

We are lucky we still have like we call it a pure copper bloodline. Most of the coppers come from this bloodline and as far we can go back this line is never crossed with other collors. These coppers came from Claudia whish got offspring from Günter Schultschik whish got offspring from Henk Wallays. And now like i do we will ceep this trend and ceep this kind separated from other collors. Maby this allso explains why they all look that similar till so far.. This trend is maby over 20 years old with this well bred bloodline.

I am allso happy to share some eggs with you i got from someone who bred them. Its maby they second bred in the netherlands so far we know.

Ill try to ceep you guys up to date with the egg development untill they become adult. I hope all turns out well.

*Warning: After the first page I stopped reading and only looked at the pics so sorry if my post is pointless*

This is a pic of Gazoo, an axolotl I got from my friend. When she bought her she was told she was an Olive and that they were rare. Its the only one I've physically seen but I've seen plenty of pics of lighter variations. She recently layed white eggs so she must be albino.

The copper/olive coloration is very beautiful... I just hope people don't try too hard to breed for it... As long as the animals are healthy, though...

Hmmmmm one of those is the closet to my keeper that I have seen yet

This guy confuses me because I cant seem to find any colour he actually fits.

His speckles look to dark/grey for a copper .... his "base colour" nothing like any of the other wild types - as they get older he becomes MORE different. Still regardless of the name of his colouring I do like him very much.
