The colour named "Copper"

I've dug up a photo taken on my mobile phone of one of the axolotls they call Olive over here. Pretty sure its the same as Copper in Europe and not a wildtype. I like the way the gills seem particularly dark and contrast well with the body colour on these individuals. Unfortunately I gave this particular individual away as I was going away on holiday for an extended period but I'm sure I can pick up another one soon. Sorry the pic is not the best but the colours are pretty true to life. Some interesting discussions on the possible genetics of these colour forms.

Considering Axolotls are the only exotics species of Reptile or Amphibian to be permitted over in Australia I think we are well blessed with the colour forms available in the local pet shops and markets. Axolotls are also not allowed to be imported into Australia (although I'm not sure how long ago this came into effect) so these Copper individuals could well have arisen seperately from the European strain.

Regards Neil

i really like the copper but i love the "silver dalmation" pic that was in that other thread...
i guess i just like the greenish body color with red gills....

i suppose i would be happy with a very light wild type..

i digress, your axie is very pretty or handsome what ever fits best

wow yours is almost the color of a pumpkin.... i would have to give it a Halloween name...
or perhaps i would call it clem cause its the color of a clementine orange

I LOVE IT

haha! <3

his name is Melanie, because before he turned into a daddy we thought he was a girl. So now i guess its Mel, like mel gibson :(

I saw a copper, or olive if you like yesterday.... too bad it was a 2 hour drive home (with 3 hours of shopping in the middle) .... I so wanted to bring him home

YellowPebble, Mel is lurrrvely! And I ADORE your avatar!

Boooo - you should have. You know I'd have been sick with jealousy though!

I hate that look D:
It makes you feel bad for even thinking about it.

hehe, thanks mewsie! I think he is very handsome :) Boo, 'm a few hours drive from Sydney myself and my copper just fathered some eggs, where abouts are you?

@Mewsie... I know right... but ti was kind of sensible too cause we ended up not getting home for another like 8 hours

@Yellow... about 6-7 hours away from you :(

Just a bit more on the copper genetics... there was a debate wether it was an albino gene.

the eggs he fathered hatched a few days ago, and their colours are already showing. About half of the larva are albino, if not more. They are translucent white without visible eyes. The rest are dark... melanoid or wild type. The mother is a black melanistic, so to get some albino both of them must be carrying the albino gene.

This makes me think the copper colouration is an albino variant, because to get over half albino larva he would have to be homozygous albino. If they were both heterozygous (just carrying the gene without it showing), theoretically only 1/4 of the larva would have been albino.

to get this coloration of larva he would have to be homozygous albino/albino...full albino

it would be interesting to breed him with a white, obvious albino axie... if they all come out white chances are he is in fact a total albino.

Both the copper and the "silver dalmation" are GORGEOUS.

I'm so gonna look for these once I'm ready to get my next axolotl.

I heard there is only 1 copper male in whole of the Netherlands :p
There has been offspring though I'm trying to get in touch with her see if she might have some more

So...is Chicken olive, or copper?

I'm postive he isn't wildtype, because when you look really closely at his eye (especially in the first photo), the pupil is a really dark red/maroon. His colouring is like a leopards; very light brown body, and darker brown spots.

To add a bit more confusion :p, when olives/coppers are sexually mature, do their toes go black like an albino, or paler like the others?

I still haven't found such an awesome axie :(

these Copper individuals could well have arisen seperately from the European strain.

Interessting tought.

copper x copper x f1 copper x f2copper x f3 copper x copper = allways copper.

If it was just a collor mutation of the ''hobby'' axolotl should some of the outcome not allso contain other collors?? In that case they should not have all the same genes ...
It allsmost looks like a species of its own..........

I still wonder where they all came from.. Are there any research going on allready?

Hi,

The shop I had my two albinos from offered to order me a 'marble' one that was described as light brown with darker brown spots. I don't think this was wild type as I was offered one of those aswell plus a black one.

Should I take him up on the offer of the marble and see if it a copper?
