Tank setup help........ pleeaaaassssseeeeee

Thanks for all of your help, i think i will just do what i think will work best, im going to find all of the possible candidates to keep the axolotls in and post a pic to see what is the most suitable... I think im getting some money back tomorrow so i could possible be getting them then, wednesday or thursday depends if i can get any more of my money back to buy the dechlorinator and food... I cant wait im so excited i feel like i have waited for ages!!! I will let you know when im getting them and will post some pics of the containers to see if they will be ok and of the axolotls when i get them... :D:D:D

Hi, if things go to plan then it looks like i will be getting my baby axolotls tomorrow :D:D:D:D... But before i get them i wanted to run thorugh a few things...
Im going to temporarily keep them in a large plastic storage box with oxygen and do 100% daily water changes, this will be ok right?
Also should i keep them in there together or in seperate containers...
Also should i get live or frozen blood worms and will this be ok for now or should i feed them earthworms straight away (not sure how big they have to be untill they can have earthworms)...
I think that is it, i would have posted pictures of the containers but i lost the fingy... lol but if i find it i will post some pictures of the axolotls when i get them.... Please remind me if i have forgetting something or need to so something else thanks for all your help :D:D:D

What size is the container you plan to keep them in initially, how many baby axies, and what size are they? If they are pretty small, bloodworms will be fine, or if they are a bit larger use earthworms.
And also, if you are doing 100% water changes, that will be plenty of oxygen, you won't need an airstone.

at that size they should be able to take some earthworm...I would get frozen bloodworm just for convenience. if you do buy live ask how fresh they are, pet shops always do deals for 5-6 tubes but most will probably die before you feed them. Don't be afraid to ask for some fresh ones.

If it is not a problem for you house them individually, that way the ammonia levels will not get too high and you can cut down on any injuries.

umm let me see the one that i could find is about 47cm length and 21.5 cm wide and the height is... (i didnt measure that) there will be two babies which are about 4-5cm is that big enough or should i get a bigger one?... Oh and thanks for the oxygen thing :D

I am not sure really that is quiet small for Axolotl but they are still small. I have only had one at that size so I cant really comment on aggression etc...but I do know he used to swim about like a nutter. If it is possible I think it would be better to have them on there own. Have you got a day in mind when the tank etc will be up and running?

I will put them seperatly i think i have two storage boxes which might be bigger but i cant find them i need to ask my dad where they are, what size would you reccomened at least if i was to house them separatly.... Im not sure when the tank will be set up, not any longer than the end of next week though... But should i let the cycle start before putting them in there or put them in there after i put them in....
Oh i found some of my nephews play sand its from sainburys and is quite dark but i think it might become lighter when i wash it... But is the play sand from argos a very light color...??

Im leaving in a minute to get my axolotls :D:D can i use this in my tank to decholrinate the water and get rid of chloramines....

Hi, i finally have my cute little baby axolotls... i just put them in there temporary home and left them to settle in.... They both have a little hand missing but i think they will grow back nicely they look like there already growing back well... I got a Leucistic one and i think the other one is a wild type one but im not sure, what i am sure about is how great they are... I’m a very proud owner of two beautiful little axies :D:D:D:D:D

Hi i know this is a site forum for amphibians but i was just getting all of the pebbles out of my tank so i could put sand in the tank ready for my axolotls and i found some baby cherry shrimp i had some shrimp in my tank before and they had babies but now im wondering if my water had bad parameters then would these shimp have survived or can they live with bad parameters...

Some Shrimp are hardier than others, both species wise and individually, however they typically do not tolerate bad parameters at all. Especially the fry.
"Specially " bred shrimp are often less hardy due to a lack of genetic diversity. :(

They will make a nice snack for you Axolotl...I am not sure in this situation if you still need to quarantine

Oh ok well i got them out of the tank anyways but im not going to feed them to my axolotls thats mean they was there first lol... But i have some pictures of my axolotls Silkey and Mudkip, oh and what colour is would you say the brown one is (Mudkip)

Looking good, The dark one is probably a wild type he looks like my wild at that age, search the picture section for leeroy there are a few threads from the last couple months. I am not sure if you can tell difference between wildtype and melanoid at that age, does he have reflective gill stems or rings around his eyes?

I would say the leucistic is slightly too skinny, when you look at them there body and head should be same width, Have you tried earthworm?

I thought so but im not sure about the rings in his eyes... I did notice that the Silkey
wasnt to sure about the food when i put it in there but Mudkip ate some food but i just left them as i thought they was abit shy about eating around me, by the morning the bloodworms were gone but who ate them.... They seem to be getting along well and was together when i got them so i kept them together but now im wondering if i should seperate them so i know both of them are getting enough to eat but im not to sure if i have another suitable container for them...
I havnt had a chance to get a hold of any earthworms from the shop and im not to keen on getting them from my garden as although pesticides havnt been sprayed in my garden i dont know if they have come from a garden that has... Will feeding them earthworms help to put on some weight.. and what else can i do to help Silkey get to a more suitable weight... Thank you :)

They eat like monsters at that age just give them enough food. you will get worms from any bait shop, I know there is one on lee high road but there must be one near you.

Just for peace of mind I would separate but if it is a problem it is not important

Thanks Tom when i fed them tonight they seemed to gulp a bunch up in front of me so it looks promising... Im not sure where to find a bait shop iv never had to use one before but i will work on getting some even if i do have to get them from lee high rd but thanks anyways.... and i will see how they go together for now and if i run into any more problems i will try and seperate them immediatly but hopfully they will be going into the big tank soon..:D
