Post pictures of your axolotl setups

yeah ive seen them candle ones but ones they sell at pets at home are like plasticy ones..think they would still be a bit small though.

ill just stick with what i got maybe itll look nicer once i get round to givin it a good clean.

its pebbles i got from focus do it all..i bought them thinking they were like all big sized. they are a mixture with biggest being bout an inch and a half and smallest about a cm which is why i also wanna get rid of it.

i have put sand in mine will it eat it and will it be able to pass it through or will it get stuck and clog up

Axie's may eat the sand yes, but is less likly to block there stomach like small gravel will.

I have gone from small gravel to Sand. This seems to be ok now!

ok i will try because i dont have a camera but shud be gettin one soon

Got my sand

I've just put it in, so the water's a bit mucky, but I like how it looks already. It's not the fine white stuff I wanted, and I'll be adding some regular coloured sand in spots as well along with some live plants when I can find some... but it's a start! Poor Falkor though, he hates living in a tupperware container!

ok here is a piccy of my 2nd tank set up: current occupants Arwen, Tweak, Moonpie
This is 32" tank with undergravel filter that has been conditioning for weeks with mollies in, it's now ready for these beasties to go back in. There are 3 lumps of slate which, i drop worms onto when the axies are sitting there. Don't want too many worms wriggling off and expring at some later date in the gravel.

The lids off right now and I have a piece of stiff black plastic stuck to the back glass with tape. Fix that this weekend. That weird staining at the back is just splashed water which i have to dry off now!

Tank 1 is now in its finshied form too so i'll take fresh piccy later of that for you.

Just a few pics. The first one kind of shows how I've got small rocks scattered around the bottom, for something to grab ahold of. They seem to like the areas of bare bottom more though, so I may take these out. They've got pots for their own 'cave', and some PVC pipes to play in.

This pic shows the water baffle I built for the filter. The outflow was creating too much current, so with this, the water now just kind of trickles in. The airstone is in the corner adjacent to this one, so one half of the tank is very still, and the other half has a slight current. They like playing in the airstone.

love the baffle idea. What did you make it out of? It looks like some kids toy. Lego or those stick things? (cant remember name but my kids had them once).

KC mine hated bare bottom, they couldn't seem to walk comfortably. Even when I put them in a tub to try and persuade them to get sexy I put a piece of slate in. Invariably I find them on the slate and not the bare glass.

lol, These are indeed a little kids toy, Construx, by Fisher Price. They come in different sizes, make great building stuff. The karelinii have a raft made out of them.

I dont have glass, they're in a 30 gal plastic rubbermaid tub. But they're still young, so they do a lot more swimming than walking. I might switch over to sand once they get older.

hi there!
i just got a new tank for my 3 axolotls, now they will have much more place to swim around as they already grew up to 15 cm long! :]
i thought to keep the same set up inside - middle size gravels, few real plants, basic filter with foam, few caves made of plastic tubes, stones from river...
now my question is, i got new plants but they were in the pet shops in water with few fishes [i couldnt find plants to sell in water free of fishes], so i wanna clean them before to add them, with what can i do that? salted water? will it kill all dangerous things which could be in the plants? also in general im cleaning stuff like gravels mostly with clean water cause im afraid of chemical products which usually contains amoniak, but at the same time clean water cannot clean completely i guess? im also adding to the water 2 products, "Cycle" and "Aqua+" both by Nutrafin, the first against amonia and nitrite, the second against chlor, chloramine and heavy metals. thanx for advice...

Kaysie-Thats a great set up i might be willing to make one like yours there rather cheap and you could provide the right amount of water for each axolotl. It looks great

Mik mentioned lego a bit earlier- has anyone ever used it in a tank? I'm asking because one of my friends did in her goldfish tank, and almost all of the fish died a few days later. It was a well established tank that had been running for about a year. Someone at the fish store told her not to use lego because it leaches harmful chemicals into the water. Anyone know if it's true? Just curious... and if it is true, hopefully this will stop other people from trying it

if legos leeched harmful chemicals, they surely wouldnt be on the market as little kids toys. Do you know how many little kids put legos in their mouth each year?

kaysie, have you seen what they put in _food_ these days? i wouldn't be surprised at all that a non food item had harmful chemicals in it!

If you read up on lego and construx etc, you will find they carry none toxic labeling.

I have to agree with Katy. There are plenty of items that are Non-toxic to us but plenty toxic to Axolotls, I don't see why Lego couldn't be?
Maybe not from the actual Lego but who knows what it touches or comes in contact with...

Thats why you wash things before putting them in the tank. I scrubbed these for like an hour and soaked them before putting them in the tank.

I'll stand behind my using legos and other childrens toys to build things.
