Post pictures of your axolotl setups

I'm not using any sort of fertilizers for the plants ... they grow by themselves.

As for the sand ... as long as you dont install the tube that goes to the filter all too close to the sand, you shouldn't have any problems with the sand getting sucked.

In my setup, the entry is about 1 Inch (3-5 cm) above ground (see pic below)

if i just take the axie and put it in a bowl if i just pour the sand in from the pet shop will it cloud the water or is it ok

ok, I don't have sand, but you said "hopfully someone without sand will chime in now" So here I am! I would still wash the sand - cause when I get gravel from the pet shop and it's still a bit dirty. So just was it to be on the safe side - a few extra minutes in the bigining could save you hours later on!!!

yep, definitely wash the sand - 3 or 4 times, or until the water runs clear. i did this, and even so, my water was a bit cloudy until i did the first water change after putting it in. the axies didn't seem to mind, though.

Good stuff, thanks! He's starting to eat from my fingers now, which I like because I know he's getting all his food that way. He digs around a little bit, but once he's figured out that food is only found in fingers it should discourage him from eating the sand?

I think I've got all the info I need for the sand, but if I've missed something please let me know!
Thanks again

OK this is my larger tank set up. This tank 4ft long and currently holds 6 adults.
Water's a but cloudy but today is 20% water change day and this tank isn't fully conditioned yet. Also I am planning to double he depth of stones and a add a couple more of the large plants.

My 3ft tank is in the house and full of mollies right now. I Also have a tub to the side of this tank full of mollie fry which will be sacrificed to the axies when 3/4-1" long.

these pics look dead weird...like mik ur tank looks real small in the pix yet big cos the axys look small...if u get me lol....but my tank is 3ft yet seems so small even with just 2 axys in it.....maybe tis cos is only 12inches wide. i was so annoyed, i went in manchester pet shop and they had 36 by 18 or maybe was 15 for same price i paid for mine plus i think it came with a lid! i really need a lid! if i buy one witha light is it ok to keep the light on with axys in??

omg i got a great product..a gravel cleaner but electric one its so fantastically superb! ok well my boyfriend bought it to clean his fish tank but ive nicked it off him. i was trying it on his tank and wow! you can hook it on the side the tank and clean up the c r a p from the gravel then it cleans it n puts it back in the tank! ew just noticed on my filter a dead worm is stuck to the side of it! how unamusing!

Jenny,

Im sure people would like to see your tank.. so come on get those photos taken.

I have taken the gravel out of my tank and when i get five mins one day will take some more pics to show you all.

Im trying to find some sand for the tank due to the fact i have some live plants they aren't happy at all just sitting at the bottom of the tank.

So if anyone knows where to get some very fine sand or silica sand around the milton keynes area let me know.

i tried taking pix of fijibobs swollen leg but cant cos my cam is NOT GOOD i will try 2moz in natural light of the tank but my mum is stil yet to give me the chest of drawers so i can put my tank on to make it easier of the tank..but will post whatever pic i get of it 2moz . grrr gonna av to tidy my room now :p

Behave Jenny!

Jenny, the majority of those axies in my tank are 300mm long.

Lid is good, the axies don't really need the light it's more for my benefit. The light i have in there is actually shorter than the hood so it ins't as bright as it might have been. I have also trimmed that black plastic side panel that you can see sticking out. I made these out of Corlux which is corrugated plastic sheeting that is now used for shuttering on ground beams. You might be able to see the back and sides are now opaque.

I'm just looking at the foto now and wondering where the heck Tweak is. I can see Moonpie up by the top of the RHS lifting tube. Nevermind other must be sitting on him.

Those battery driven cleaners are ok for a while. I have one but the button doesn't stay depressed any more so I have to keep my thumb on it. Good for collecting larger 'lumps'.

Like the set-up Kirsten...shows them off well. whats the yellow ball thing looks like an air freshener?

looks like an amonia collector thing.

why was my message edited with a behave message...what did i do? was somethin deleted? i cant remember what i wrote!

ok i said id put whatever pic turns out and this is what turned out! sorry of the bad quality but as it is so low down theres no light or anything and ive no battery for my cam so it is plugged in the comp while i take a pic so cant use flash on it. also it is in 2 parts cos my room iss really small and i cant step back far enough.

from what you can see do i have too much stuff in there? or should i fill it with more water so they can swim about more...i was thinking of filling with more water but not til its on the chest of drawers so its not so heavy to lift.

Yes it's an ammonia ball. I bought it right before I bought my new filter and haven't decided whether to take it out or not. I figured it couldn't hurt and it's one of their favourite things to lay on.

i can't see anything at all in those pics, jenny, sorry! kirsten's tank is perfect for room - you could put more plants in it, but that's just preference.

I was wondering about more plants, but from everything I had read, the general opinion seemed to be not to put in too many plants as the Axolotls would just damage them. So considering the price of plants, I thought I would see how they went.

I have 9 plants at the moment, mostly planted at the enterance to 'permanent' fixtures such as their pvc pipe hidey holes. I figured these would have less chance at being pulled out. I assume that if the plants thrive, they will grow bigger anyway?

I also have a floating banana lilly in the tank which is just sprouting a heap of new leaves.

Kirsten, the plant in mine is fake. But it was expensive and looks really good...stands up to inspection well.

Got fed up of Tweak bull dozing everything. Plants never got a chance to root and simply rotted. On ly thing that thrived was floating plants, like small clover, but it went wild I was fishing handfuls out everyday to try and keep under control.

my tank is real dull i want coloured gravel but not cos to small but has anyone seen giant pieces of coloured gravel? ive seen plastic gem things that cost like 1.99 for about 12 but thatll cost c*** loads to fill a tank! plus id rather have opaque ones.

Jenny,

I have seen opaque Glass pepples in morrions £.199 for quite a big bag. But i really wouldnt advised you getting them as they are half an inch in size and are coated in something, which i cant see staying on the stone once in the water and with axies kicking them about the place.

BTW you tend to see these 'gem' stones in the bottom on floating candle displays.

Hello!!! I'm new to this website and idk how to ask a proper question on the designated spot yet, so I'll ask here, I'm a first time Axolotl owner, and my dad used to run an aquarium store, anyways... Orca, my Axolotl, seems to loose parts of her toes on one limb from time to time, I can't seem to find the problem. Tempature is well, she doesn't seem to have any infections or anything, though. And I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet in Brazil for amphibians that are in a reasonable distance to drive without stressing Orca out too much

Hello, I’m hoping for some advice please. Our Axolotl is about 7 months old. Till now no problem. Eating, growing and happy. He’s simply stopped eating. Everything looks fine, his gills look healthy and no apparent signs of sickness. He just swims past the pellets and bloodworm like he can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a blockage either. Any ideas and suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
