OMG Shes Laying Eggs! YAY!!!!!

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

And at Ollie, I have an aquarium in ballarat who stocks it, I'm buying tonnes to culture myself lol!

That's the same aquarium shop i have found out about from you :)
so ollie when i get some 2moro, and culture them you can always get some from me no added charge or anything, will prob work out cheaper if i can figgure out how to culture them :D

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

the ones you got were in a colder room where as I have some from same mum at my house who are almost ready to hatch, those ones should be hatching on saturday and yours probably sunday.

also the eggs are at the developing stage of about 5
{according to Axolotls - Embryo Photo Log }

so i don't think they are going to hatch any time soon, about 7-10 days as i have them at 20 °C at the moment, it must of been really cold out in the back room at ur mums where they were set up, because they are 10 day old eggs and they haven't developed very far as of yet, but now im sure they will grow a little quicker

:D

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

Wow thanks guys :D. There's a great article on how to culture daphina here Daphnia ... but you probably already knew that

I'd probably culture it too. It seems infinitely better than BBS or blackworms

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

I just wish the daphnia survived a bit better grr!! all well, I brought about 2000 of the things and have like 50 left LOL! I'm gunna buy some more to put in my big setup tub. and yes it was cold out there but the ones back there according to the axolotl embryo page are about day 7.. And we kind of wanted them to hatch slower (more time for food). Its best you remove the female once shes done laying Suzi, ours stayed with her mates when those eggs were born and shes fine!! So about how many eggs do you think you got in total?? Because theyre so small when our one was done laying we thought we had about 100... We counted 500 as we pulled them out of the tank haha! I said I was going to give you all fertile ones but because you ended up getting alot more it was just all pulled out of the top tub so most of them were fertile but the rest you can keep as souvenirs lol! the top tub also recieved alot of sunlight, so they would of been growing a tiny bit faster than the rest. Just waiting on news for eggs from mum lol! She laid a second batch 1 week after she laid her first, she had about 11-12... but these eggs are just weird.... the eggs we gave you are actually 13 days old! We have some at my house of her eggs about ready to hatch.. As soon as you can tell the head apart from the tail, they can hatch!! Lol most of the eggs are due to hatch on my birthday :/ sep 3rd haha. Spring is here now!! Also for whatever you plan on doing for your hatchery, make sure there is no rocks on the bottom of the tank, as the larvae will kill themselves in it.As you saw with our tank when you got the eggs, the eggs were just in there on their own, this is for that reason. When those 2 inside guinea pigs you saw move out again to their other house the egg tank will be put in that room, alot warmer of course! Some people advise removing the infertile eggs before others have hatched, but I leave them in there because the babies will eat them eventually. Also feel free to remove eggs from whatever she laid on as they have a hard jelly outer, and thats what you can pick up to move the eggs. Anyway I've gotta get to school lol, cya!

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

yes i know all that lol but the eggs i have are at stage 5 like i said :) the gill buds are only just visible. i have other baby's i know what im doing. just this lots of eggs is the first iv actually had layed at my house, iv always got eggs from the pet shop when they have eggs i have put my name down at all the aquariums i could find lol!

but i do suggest you change the gravel from your axie tank cos they can swallow it and it can cause some serious damage inside them.

also you might be interested in looking at this site, of development of larvae
Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) - Embryonic developmental stages

also, my female had all her eggs on plants, and it was in a set up set especially for breeding purposes, with the right types of slate rocks for males spermatophores to attach to because they tend to look for that type of rock, also it had a low bubble filter just for that tank along with reg water changes, and sand substrate. along with plenty of plastic easy to remove plants, for the female to lay her eggs on, witch she did just that, then as soon as she was having them i removed the male. and while she was having them as soon as each plant was used to the point where she was stepping on the eggs i removed each plant. and she moved onto the next :)
she's def done now i think and i counted each egg on each plant, there's about 175 egg's
and its best not to remove them from the plants as they can get damaged easily, that's why i had removable plants so there's no need to disturbed them in any way.
anyways, in other words i know exactly what im doing :D

oh and here's a pic of the egg's a few are squished by the mother while laying, and have gone a bit funny.. =/ also im now thinking the mother might be a copper not a wild type because she layed all white eggs... witch i have found very weird...

Egg's: there's alot more on the other side of the tank lol but in this pic you can see some of the squished / infertile eggs

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

The eggs are actually very strong, but yes plants is normally an excellent idea. The rocks in my tanka re to small to do any damage and can be cared for easy. they normally have no problems passing these rocks they just dont eat for a week or so, and its funny to watch when they try to snap at the food and geta mouthful of rocks, then they spit them all out again!! We didnt have plants when mine first layed but we brought some because of the reason its better to move the plants, but normally theyre fine being handled, the ones you got were pulled off of the bridge you saw in the main tank. They have strong glue lol!! youd have the pull on the jelly so the eggs move with it and when it gets stuck we had to get a butter knife to help lol!! Baby axolotls will dig underneath the rocks and suffocate themselves, so make sure you have 1 very thin layer of rocks, also so that when theydig it up any worms they didnt get to eat they can find more easy.

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

And yes you'd have to be well experienced at it ;) and yeah I already know the development stages, and at the moment the ones in the back rooms gill buds have just popped out (stage 6) and my ones at home their gill buds are fully developed and theyre front legs have started to grow, heart and liver are visible to the naked eye (stage 8)

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

I'll also be buying more daphnia from this shop today as my ones are hatching at home LOL!!

any rocks are big enough to cause damage the fact that after they do eat them they don't eat for a week or so is a very bad thing! you really should take out the gravel it can cause blockages and worse death, stress, pain and disease, the only thing small enough to not cause damage is sand, and even that may at time cause blockages and floating problems.
the only rock that's safe for an axie is one bigger than its head. very large pebbles or big rocks.

also i dont keep anything in with my egg/babys as its not safe. i keep my babys in 10 litre storage container's with a small airstone and no substrate, making it easyer to do daily water changes as well. until my 3 golden baby's get to 5cm they will be in there container, then they will be put into a tank, i'll use this procedure with the egg's too when they hatch :D

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

Sounds like a sweet idea :) but you will have to watch out for cannibalism... The only thing that makes it hard, cannibalism, and food ;) like daphnia. I got two more lots of it to add to my 40 gallon tub... lol... glad I can get that rather than having a look-like drug lab. LMAO-BBS.

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

lol it totally does tho... BBS hatchery's looks like a drug lab haha! im not gonna make BBS for the new baby's when they hatch i don't think.. im going prob go get some daphnia 2moro, i went to melb today and ended up buying 3 more axies... lol they are juvi's only about 13cm and one has a missing leg, and one of the others has a huge bite out of his tail, so i couldn't not buy them, then they guy offer all 3 of them for $20 so i couldn't resist! ... now i have all my adults in my 200litre tank, and the juvi's in the 2ft tank :D oh and i know about the cannibalism, at 2cm is when you will need to separate the larvae into same size's and only have 10 baby's to a 20litre container at max.

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

thought you would already know that :) its just they can be fine in all together, they just grow rapidly slow if they have to regrow legs, because they regrow the limb instead of growing bigger. so its best to seperate!! Good on your new axies, where exactly did you buy them from in melbourne? A pet shop or a seller in the market?

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

Gee suzi you will be living on the roof soon if you keep buying axies. Where do you fit them all??? I thought I was bad with 4 tanks in the lounge room:D. How are you going to keep them cool in summer?

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

my house is a 4bedroom 2 bathroom huge lounge room house.. lol lots of room, we only have the 2 toddlers so they share a play room leaving me with one spare bathroom {aquarium room for breeding and baby's} and then we have the 2ft turtle tank, next to a 2ft axie tank that's where the juvi's are in, the 2ft one cos they are still pretty small, then we just finished waiting for our new tank to be ready for axies its 4ft but it holds 200litres its bigger and taller than normal 4ft tanks. as the rule is 10 gallons per axie.. well 200 litres is 52 gallons, so that's 5 axies xD so i have 4 in there at the moment but if needed later i can add another the tank it HUGE! plus i still have the 120litre breeding tank set up in the bathroom in case of emergency's and it can home 2 axies, its not a tank but a big plastic storage container, the cheapest way of homing axies if you cant afford to get a new glass tank. then we have 3 baby's golden albinos in a 10 litre container in the bathroom also, and both lots of egg's. and this is all just while my hubby is building me a custom wall unit, its going to hold 2x 4ft 200litre tanks one over the other like at a pet shop haha and under the first tank is goig to be cupboards that have glass doors and they will fit smaller tanks for the kids gold fish and what ever else needs to be behind glass so they cant get it lol so then that when it is done is going to be in the lounge with the 2x 4ft tanks, with axies in them, and the 2ft turtle tank and the 2ft other tank witch by then will prob hold something like fish or the other golden albino baby's when they are juvi's lol that's going to be put where our 4ft tank is set up at the moment, im just lucky i have a massive lounge room that has so much room and perfect places to set up tanks. oh and the summer thing, my house has aircon and me and the kids get eczema really bad in summer, so we have the house cool all tho summer, and if it does rise then we will just do frozen water bottles and cold water changes on the bad days

and just cos im super bored this morning... here's a pic i draw of my lounge layout lmao

pet shop they were in a tiny little tank too =[ sad to see that, and last night when i was looking at them closer, i realised that the little girl doesn't have a missing leg that's growing back, she has a deformed leg, and so does the boy, his toes are all grown into one, and on the other foot its all strange too... so they both have deformed front legs. at first i thought they might have been biting at each other and fighting alot but now im pretty sure they are def related and are have deformed front legs. and the other bigger one of the 3 doesn't have any missing or deformed anything, just the two smaller one's... but they seem happy and they are great eaters as well so i think they will live a great life with us. they are our special little ones.

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

Our 4 ft tank is also a bit more than 200 and a special one i'm getting will be 299 litre tank (I might be getting 2 of them!!) We have 4 bedrooms, 2 studys, 1 laundry, 2 bathrooms, the huge kitchen huge lounge room and various entrys and passageways. We then have a 2 acre back yard with a big shed!

Re: OMG Shes Laying Egg's! YAY!!!!!

yea im getting another the same as my new one as soon as the wall unit/shelves is made xD
i only mentioned the amount it holds cos normal 4ft tanks don't hold that much and i don't want people thinking im squishing my axies in something small lol i took some pics yesterday of it too xD
