Moving to England!

Hi Jesper. I live in Bristol and would recommend it as a great southern city (It has industry but then which city doesn't?). If you want to be near London try Brighton which is a bit like Bristol but with a beach. Both have huge student communities, good bars, parks, nice georgian/victorian architecture and great countryside surrounding them. Neither have great football teams - but then lower league stuff is often more entertaining. Norwich and Ipswich are in the back of beyond with no motorway connections which makes them a real struggle to get to and from. Good luck!

Jesper:

We're desperately short of pharmacists over here near The Salamander Capital of the World. My county school system needs some 1500 new teachers before the new school system starts, too. Been growing faster than services can keep up.

We had winter from 4 to 10 PM on a Tuesday in January this year

And I'm hiring a Research Pharmacologist soon as I get authorization.

Hi,
Bad thing that you have to do exams for about
5000$ to work as a pharmacist in the states.

I did a large review in pharmacology as my masters degree project, analysis of GPCRs structure-activity relation to sum it up

Have also been doing some basic research on the Neuropeptide Y receptors, mostly desensitization/internalisation related stuff. Interesting but frustrating ;)

Actually the UK seems to be equally desperate judging from the salaries they offer...

I think Yorkshire is a bit to far north for me, on the other hand - what do I know? Haven't been in england for ages and ages.

Just need to know where I want to go first...thanks for all the help.

Keep the advice coming if you come to think of something!! I really appreciate it.

Brighton might be a great bet actually. I don't know if its recent trendiness has made prices a bit high, though. OTOH, it has the ocean, a great arts community, lots of shops, close enough to London that you can visit sometimes....I know Bristol is also an area that has a lot to offer and is way cheaper than more south.

No free positions in Brighton :/ Maybe a bit too trendy eh

Bristol sure sounds like a nice place, how's the southwest like Devon or Cornwall? Quiet?

i love cornwall myself. the countryside is gorgeous, the shore is rugged, the weather is mild...i don't know about universities though...someone else might. i think they get a bit of rain though. to be honest, if i had to choose somewhere to live other than london it would be wales. fantastic countryside, diverse environments, fertile...sometimes a bit cooler and wetter than everywhere else though.

Devon is nice. There are a couple of university towns there, Plymouth and Exeter, both of which are ok. Due to their smaller size and remote location they tend to have less on offer than larger cities. Cornwall has great countryside and coasts but awful towns (IMO). It's a very poor area of the country with struggling industry, places that should be quaint fishing villages are more often than not turned into garish tourist attractions for the Birmingham hoards. I wouldn't choose to live there.

Don't move to Swindon! Don't even think about it...or Milton Keynes for that matter...

Hi Jesper,

London Heathrow Airport to Bristol by car is 1.5 hours, to Norwich by much improved motorway/A road connections takes 2 hours.

East Anglia is still cheap by southern standards, but the terrain is quite flat, being in the fens.

Bristol, however has all you require, with great countryside just down the road. (The Cotwolds, and south Wales included).

I wouldn't go to brighton if it's girls you're looking for

Ah Mike,
You got me by the balls with that statement.

To me it means that I'll accept my destiny whatever come, more than I do not believe that I have no say. I.e. I consider me asking about this a part of my destiny rather than me trying to run from it. Kudos to you for paying attention ;)

Destiny to me is more like a deterministic view than the stoics more religious belief in destiny.

Brighton is out of the question anyway Francesco!
So you think that Newcastle-girls are nicer than Brighton-girls then??

Hey Jesper,

I got an idea: Put all the names of the cities/towns, on little pieces of paper. Put them in a hat, and blindly pick one! That is where you will go!

Yes, sigh, it would be hard to decide. Sounds like you have a wonderful, and exciting, adventure awaiting you (and just think, it comes with a job!).

i think the thing about girls in brighton must be because there is a thriving gay community there. however, this doesn't mean there are no girls!

Thanks Pin! Nice to hear from you!
It's not 100% yet though....we'll see what happens.

Well, I'm second for a position in Bristol. The process is VERY slow...

It's a toasty 30C here in Bristol today! BBQ weather. If you get your place let me know and I'll give you the lowdown on the best places to buy crickets, worms, waxworms etc.. That's if you're bringing your pets along...maybe newts can travel as hand luggage

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
