Floating...

Last night the tank was 25 there is 2 frozen bottles in the tank and im going to the shop to get a fan.

I brought him in this morning and hes now sitting on a tiled floor so that should keep him cooler, he seems a bit brighter but thats not saying much. So fingers crossed.

When i get home i'll get some more pictures of him.

good to hear he's looking up, i hope this works! juju and aztec and i are thinking of you all.

well guys this is the news today....

Spunky seems to have picked up a bit swimming around and stuff. But im worrying about his poo.. he's been trying for 5hours!!

Im thinking that it could be something worse than poo.. prolapse. Its very red and he was bleeding a little.

He back in the garden at the mo keeping kool.. i'll take a look in the morning and get some more photos.

One thing i did notic was the white thing in the next photo bottom right of it this is something that DID come out of his bum!

Anyway let me know what you think!!

with him bloating up..did u say spunky was a boy? because even lookin at his sexy bits they look very un seeable? sorry i know this doesnt help with the rest of his probs. maybe the vains r from it is a girl and shes producing loadsa eggs. that prob sounds very uneducated of me sorry. but im still learnin!

Jenny,

Spunky is 5 months old. Im calling him a him because i know that females have a wider head then males, and i cant tell if they are female/male for sure yet.

Its only developed over the last month but Spunky has a much smaller head width ways than Jynx She has a huge head.

But im sure i will find out for sure in 6months.

not sure about the prolapse, but it's possible he had something caught in his gut, which might explain the bloating, and has only just managed to pass it, possibly with the assistance of a lower temperature. if he's still trying to pass it, maybe stick him in the fridge overnight. i know a lot of people have used this as a 'last reort' type of thing to help axies heal themselves.

i know ppl say six months to mature but like...you get girls reaching puperty at 11 some at 14 etc. id say spunky was def a girl. especially from that last pic. but then i dunno if they get that fat that quick as soon as they reach maturity. my female is i dunno how old (apparently 3 years old but i doubt thats true) but about 7 inches and is that fat.

sorry if im sounding abrupt or whatever i dont mean to be sorry.

you're right - axies mature all over the place. my male matured at about 7 inches - some don't until they're much bigger.

at the same time, though, being fat doesn't automatically make an axy female. males can be fat - if there's a medical problem like with this one, or if they just eat a lot! my male is pretty chunky himself ;)

well when i left this morning the swelling had gone down and the poo was still there, im not sure whether to give him a helping had or not.

To be truthful i dont know for sure no that he is or isnt male but i just cant call him a 'it'.

And if i can i will try and get a photo of them together to show you what i mean by there head sizes but Jynx is alot bigger than Spunky thats all i have to say.

And yes jenny axies do mature a different times thats why ive always said im guessing at it.

at 5 months it doesn't matter what sex he/she is you'll find out soon enough.

Try not to mess him about or stress him anymore than he is already Kim. He still looks very uncomfortable.

well i think this is maybe it.

When i left this morning he seemed to have picked up. But when i got home he was floating and i though he was dead but as i went to pick him up he moved..

I dont know what to do.. I think its horrible because he wants to swim but all that happens is he goes around in circles i dont like to see him like this.

The latest photo.. im sorry to other axo keepers out there but maybe i will help

Try to have a look at the article I've posted on the 'what to do in case ...', maybe this helps him pulling through this but as they say, whatever you do to cure him, dont expect results within minutes ...

good luck!

Hi Kim,

This advice might be a little late, but the substrate in your tank looks quite small and easily-swallowed by axolotls. After what happened with Peely, I'd suggest changing the substrate out of caution if nothing else - before her prolapse she passed gravel from months earlier when we last had gravel in the tank, though we'd never actually seen her eat any.

Good luck with Spunky,

Leighton

aw that pic of spunky is really sad. is there not ANY vet anywhere nearish you even if its in like the next town or something. where bouts in england do you live? if you live near manchester theres a vet near me thats australian and so he knows a lot about axys although he said hes just gonna do some extra revision into em over the weekend b4 i take oswold in bout his fungus cos i think hes been in eng for a while so hasnt really dealt with axys for a bit. its so really upsettin seein any animal like that

ok sorry just realised it was you who i asked where bouts in eng you live n u said milton keynes. . .

im sure in london theyll be quite a few ausie vets... or am i wrong in thinkin theyre more likely to cos theyre australian? theresa lota australians wi axys though as they seem quite common there. ..

I live at least an hour away from London so theres no chance this weekend as ive got my birthday party!

I have spoken to around 15 vets and no one knows anything.

saving axys life or birthday party..........saving axys life or birthday party. ok yeah birthday party.

train takes like 20 mins to london. i know there is a train from wigan to london that goes milton keynes on way every hour i bet theres •••• loads just from milten to london. sorry but i think your being really unfair. even if u take spunky to the vet and they say theres nout we can do they can at least put it down and put it out of its misery.

Jenny, I don't know where you got the idea that australian vets know alot about axolotls - so far I havn't found and aussie vet that knows anything!!! (about axi's that is, they are good with other animals) There maybe a good Aussie vet near you, but none that know anything about axis in this country!!! Actually there arn't many people who know anything about axolotls here, not even the pet shops!

Anyway I don't know what to do about the problem - I just wanted to clear that up about aussie vets.
