Elmo

that is too low, from my experience .
can you increase the temperature of your fridge for 10 or 15Cº?
I´ve had more lucky with those temperatures.

Yeah, I'll go try. I don't think at this stage that anything is going to help though.

His belly is really big, and when I gently touch it its rock hard.

Also around his bum it is very dark - I can't remember if it was like that before. I think the suggestion made about swallowing the gravel from the store may be right - the dark area may possibly be a large piece of gravel - which if is the case there is nothing I can do?

Please help

well, in my opinion if we put axies in the fridge , it will slow down he´s metabolism, and he will not poo a lot more, so when I had a constipated axie I left him in the tank so his metabolism didn´t slow down and worked as it should, he pooed almos all night and all over the tank, he was only pooing sand, now his alright, and learned that sand it´s not a good food. I´m not saying to put elmo in the tank cause if he have anything contagious, he might pass on to elsa, but leave him in the fridge ,for this night, with the temperatures that I advise you before , and don´t try to feed him.
I hope he will feel better, and again let us know how things are going.
Don´t give up...

He is still in the fridge - he can't move very well at all now. When I turned him over to have a look at the underneath of him he didn't even right himself, just stayed upside down and I had to move him back round.

Can't find the camera else I would take a photo.

By your description Elmo looks pretty bad , well, I advise you for desperate measures, like trying to scare him , but not harm him, cause when some of my larvas used to have air bubbles inside their stomach and couldn´t burp them out, for hours, I used to touch them, (I´ve notice that don´t work with Elmo) and they went to the bottom and left the air out. Try to put elmo´s out of water for a litle while, and then put him right back.
Sorry to say this but prepare yourself for the worst.
But one thing is for sure remember you are doing everything possible.

Thanks for your advice Joáo.

It's so strange because at first he wasn't having any trouble trying to stay down, he was simply gulping air on purpose to make himself float.

But it appears as though he has gulped so much air that it is now stuck in his system and wont come out.

I have tried to scarying him thing before - your right he does then burp a bubble, but there is so much air in him now that it makes little difference, and then as soon as he thinks I'e gone he's right back up to the surface to gulp some more.

Why is he doing this to himself?

I'm not sure about the dark area around his bum now, it really doesn't look like gravel.

João -From what she said before Elmo should be all pooed out.

Hayley - The swelling in the neck area could be fluid from heart or kidney or other organ problems as could the swelling of his intestinal tract making him bloated. Or he could have a bacterial infection.

I can't think of anything left to do for him unless you want to take him to the vet and see if injected antibiotics may help him. If you can't afford the vet then keep him in the fridge and wait, or put him down.

It's so so frustrating - I feel like screaming.

I just want to know why this has happened, what has caused it?

yes I think Cynthia is right, if you can go to a good vet it´s better. He might know what is the problem, and you probably right cynthia with the fluid problems.

I think I will go to the vets with him tomorrow, thats being very optimistic though

plus I doubt the vet will have a clue.

I'm prepared to pay whatever to get him better.

My parents think its something to do with the kidneys too...

I'm off to find the camera to give everyone a better idea.

Thanks so much everyone

How do they get these kidney/heart problems that causes this fluid?

Is it something I've done?

Joáo - I will take Elmo to the vets if he's still with me in the morning.

If she can't help then I will get in touch with them but I doubt they will be able to reply in time

I'm gonna stop depressing everyone now.

I'll let you know if anything drastically new emerges.

Thanks again xx

they are very quick, they reply to me in the same day.
well i´m hopping Elmo will get well.

Thanks everyone for your advice etc.

I woke up early this morning to get ready for the vets, but when I went downstairs to the fridge Elmo was already gone

I'm so upset, I can't stand losing pets, they mean everything to me.

It's made worse by not knowing what was wrong, it will just eat away at me. What if I could of saved him if I'd have known what was wrong?

Hayley, I am very sorry for your loss. Please do not blame your self, it was not your fault and you did what you could for him, that is what counts and you did a great job. Little Elmo is in a better place now, and you will always have his memories and he will always have yours. If it will help with your loss, don't be afraid to find another axolotl, as they make wonderful pets and companions as they love to watch us and love for us to feed them. Good luck to you, and know that we are all here for you at the community forum.

I have e-mailed the university for advice as to what went wrong, I'll let you know when I get a reply.
