Eggs (have moved it to here - just realised was in wrong place)

but not just an odd colour. an odd looking axy too..

i am going to think over night about food and feeding them etc then make a decision on whether to give away some eggs.

i have found a site that sells 500g of small meal worms size 5-8mm. is this still to big for first hatchling? and how long will this 500g tub last?

Trust me Jenny, you don't want to raise anymore than thirty or forty. Far better to send eggs amongst other keepers. This way you'll ensure more surviving and you'll increase the chances of raising some yourself. New colours come up very rarely so it's not worth hanging on to them for that reason.

well its not that i want a new colour thats never been seen..

but i want an orange one with black markings. which is possible?? because its a golden albino mixed with either a wildtype or melanoid?

Jenny you should probably get set up to hatch brine shrimp for your babies. Or get some daphnia going. Or both.

Meal worms are not going to work for newly hatched axolotls. I don't think meal worms are a good food for any size axolotl. But that could just be me

Check out www.brineshrimpdirect.com

You will need fresh brine shrimp eggs, the ones the pet stores carry are usually so old you get very low hatch rates. You should get started on trying to hatch brine shrimp asap, you will need your hatches to be reliable after the axolotl eggs hatch.

You can not feed them meal worms, you need a good supply of daphnia or brine shrimp. And your going to need loads of it! If you don't get rid of some eggs where are you going to put them if you grow them to a good size? You'll need hundreds of tubs with one in each to avoid cannibalism and you'll need loads of space for them not to mention the time this will take up. Your axies will breed again Jenny, more often than you'd like!

with kims suggestion of sending them on moss..

i have this fluffy type stuff that is for reptiles and rabbits etc...can i moist that and put eggs on it to keep postage costs down?

LOL, i'd advertise them in the appropriate section Jenny, i'm sure you'll find a few people who would appreciate some. One other thing though, i'm afraid genetics isn't as simple as you think. To produce new colour strains takes generations of selective breeding and is very hard to do, if it wasn't there would be a lot more colour variations about. You could breed unusual colours together and still produce all wild types!

Whats the name of the moss you have? I would prefer to send them on wet pondweed myself, but the best way is in a bottle like Kim said. This will cost about 2.50 ish, if your giving the eggs away it isn't unreasonable to ask for the postage and packing costs

i know but you never know - all the work that people put into mixing genes to produce the perfect pair to make odd babies could have freakishly happened with my breeding pair...if you get what i mean? hehe

but ill risk it...

what should i do about the packaging of them though?

i will find out the name of it when i get home. i know the brand name has the name 'science' in it though.

i will prob do the bottle thing though because it might be safer for the eggs. im going to have to take up drinking lol

I use small mineral water bottles with a bit of weed in,fill water to the top and place in a box thats a bit bigger than the bottle. Then screwed up newspaper to support it a bit. Tape it up well and thats all you need to do!
Good luck!

can i use jiffy bags. i dont know where to get boxes from?

ive just applied to post adverts on the give away and sell section. and it says it will take up to two days.

i wont be able to send til xmas eve though as i dont get paid til then and am totally skint. would it be best to send after xmas then?

You could ask shops if they have any spare boxes they'd let you have, and if you have to post after xmas it may be a good idea to cool the water to slow down the eggs development.

how should i cool it? bottles of ice or are ice cubes ok seeing as theyre just eggs?

Do you not have a garage or a outhouse? thats where i put mine if i need to, as long as they don't freeze they'll be fine. Otherwise i'd put an ice pack in with them

Jenny,
The moss type product you have is called: Supreme Science - Carefresh it is in fact wood pulp not moss.
My preferred method of sending eggs is to put them in old sterilised photographic film canisters with some water then tape round the lid as you have less eggs in each container so if any are affected by fungus etc they are confined to the individual pots, but that’s just me being over cautious.
It would be very risky posting at the moment due to Christmas postal schedules but after Christmas the eggs could be too far developed to be transported safely so as Andy mentioned above cooling the water down is a good idea to slow development.

i have a car port. but it will prob freeze over.

i will put them in the spare room and keep the heating off.

is it possible to get empty film cases from somewhere ... like boots?
