Numbers are (sorta) in!

8 Wildtype
11 Leucistic
8 Albino

Of course some of the Leucistic ones may turn darker still (all have pigment, but nowhere near as much as the Wildtype kids).

Not making any calls on Albinos...sometimes they look yellow, sometimes clear...so who knows.

My deformed one died overnight. Was to be expected, so not too sad, but still.

I've now got 5 containers:
Leucistic "Tank" alone
Albino and Leucistic twins
7 Albinos
9 Leucistics
8 Wildtypes

Of my original 25, 1 egg was bad, 1 died right away.
Of my 6 "maybe" eggs, 1 was deformed and died, 1 was fuzzy, 4 were good.

Ok, so here is Tank:

And here are my 3 groupings of babies:

Albinos. Gold looking?

Wilds:

The others that look like Tank, originally I thought Leucistic.

While trying to lock down my Axomomdadls genetics for Mel genes, I didn't see any melanoid eyes but noticed some new developments:

Alright, we're on day 12 - 8 of Hatchings. Some are now showing signs of front leg development.

Should I begin to separate them by size now? If I can swing it, make them in as few larvae as possible in each? I've already separated the albinos from the wilds and the wild-lites. (Having read that especially the wilds like to snap at non-wilds).

I have two 2 1/2 gallon tanks available, and smaller 5x5" containers I'm currently using as well. The rearing guide has a max of 25 for a 5 gallon tank, but since I only kept a small amount of eggs I currently have 26 in 5 separate containers:

Tank the survivor alone (Wild-lite)
Twins alone (Wild-lite and Albino)
7 Albinos
8 Wild-lites
8 Wildtypes

I'm thinking I can be ok with the little guys in 2 1/2 gallon tanks in those numbers.

What kind of hides do people use? What type of plants/fake hides?

When should I start to introduce pellet foods? sizes, good sources, etc.

Wow amazing!! We are first timers and have 38 eggs on around day 11 I think and so nervous about it all - yours looking great! When you water change them daily how do you move the babies? I'm so worried I'm going to stress them out.

Glad you enjoyed this blog-journal topic!

I tried a few things. I did the spoon thing, but at a few days old they get fast, and its hard to catch them in a spoon. I'm pretty sure I damaged one this way and he died.

What I do Now:

I'm using glass containers, square shape. I get a clean one ready, empty. I have the next one im putting them into ready with parent tank water. Got myself a small net, maybe 2"x2.5". I only have 7-8 max per my 5x5x5" container, so they all end up in the net real well. I pour slowly into empty clean tub. The larvae go with the water, poop, dead BBS. All those things go through the net, axies stay. I give the net a slight up down movement, make sure the bad stuff is gone. All this time the axies are in their old water but in a net. I lift the net, invert it over the tub with fresh water, and gently invert then net so they fall in the water.

Phew. All that takes 5 seconds in real life. Lol

Did a blacklight test. Tank the Peg, the wildlite/speckled leucistic was greenish, so I figured he got the GFP gene from the parents. He LIT UP. All green. The golden/wild twin pair did also, wild only in splotches as dad. Spot, the wildtype also had splotches. Because wilds are so hard to tell, the preliminary count is 19/26 GFPs.

A copy of my final "for sale" thread. Just to show their progress over 6 months:
I have my final four lotls to re-home. I initially was planning on keeping them, but due to a wedding coming up, not getting the large tank as we planned, and keeping all siblings, we decided to let these guys go to good homes.

I have plenty of pictures, but summary:

Wildtype "Spot" - Last measured at 8", two weeks ago. That was roughly 6 months of age. When smaller, one of his eyes seemed to bounce back light, and looked elongated from above. Now it looks just slightly smaller with a brow.

Leucistic "Tank" - Last measured at 7", two weeks ago. That was roughly 6 months of age. He hatched in the parents tank, and when I saw him the first day the others started to hatch, he was already larger. He's a beautiful, very lightly freckled leucistic.

White Albino "5 Gill (5G)" - Last measured at 6", two weeks ago. That was roughly 6 months of age. When they were about 2.5-3", is when I saw that he had only 5 gills. He also has an "odd" head shape, which I'll try to show in the pictures.

Golden Albino "Goldy" - Last measured at 6", two weeks ago. That was roughly 6 months of age. Had rear right leg bit off, but it grew back well, and the toes are almost done. The pictures show them two weeks ago, they look much longer/more developed now.

Again, the following pictures are from May 17th, with the eggs hatching 15-19 December, and Tank having hatched, probably a few days prior (the rest of the egg batch began to hatch on the 11th).

I am not asking for any money. This was an experience. I'm out at least $500 as well as 200+ hours of my life. It was an awesome experience. I probably won't do it again (lol).

All I am asking, is for these guys to ship via overnight, and for the buyer to cover that. Will probably be around what you'd pay for one at a show anyway.

And now...onto the pictures!
