Question: Blue axolotls?

If you breed her with a wildtype you could well get all wildtype young. Why not breed her with another melanoid and then you have a greater chance of seeing that colouring in the young straight away rather than having to breed the babies back to the mother.

Regards Neil

i dont think she has a melanoid to breed with, Im sure you could work a deal with someone to give you a melanoid in exchange sore some of the eggs or young, tho.

nice pics, any success breeding?

No success as of yet because the male is still about an inch too small to go into the same tank as her.

I got to see the batch that the wild type came from and there were melanoids. So he is most likely het for the melanoid trait. But there is a chance that the parents were both het for melanism, in which case there was a 25% chance for him to be M/M and a 50% chance for him to be M/m. The other 25% would be m/m, which he obviously is not.

By she, were you referring to me? Cause I'm a guy hahaha

How big are the male and female? An inch isn't that big of a size difference, unless one is only an inch long and the other is double that! But then, they wouldn't be breeding. ;)

The female is about 9 inches and the male is about 6 1/2. I heard that a few inches difference isn't too bad, so I figured he'd be okay at 7 1/2.

Yeah, that's pretty significant. She's a Bertha for sure!

Just a status update: The male has been moved into the same area as the female, and they have been getting along. In the weeks since I put him in, the temperatures in their area have dropped. When they do decide to breed, I will have access to BBS, but I'm currently looking for daphnia.

If you wish to see more photos of them don't hesitate to ask. :D Also, if you would like to be notified when I have eggs from her, you're welcome to send me a message declaring your interest, and I will be sure to let you know when their first batch comes along. Of course, if you are interested simply in the genetics, I can refrain from contacting you until I am sure whether or not she will breed true.

Very excited to see how this goes. Keep us informed! :)

This is a really amazing thread! I'm excited to see how the breeding turns out, and fingers crossed you'll soon have a bunch of mini blue spots swimming around! :)

It was caye's pets on division. She was the only one they had as they haven't had a supplier in a few years. But I know tropical hut (also on division) has some. Although they were in their carnivorous phase. How is the stock at pets on Broadway?

Bringing this thread out of the dungeons, sorry. I forgot to reply!

I got some of mine from Pets on Broadway, but I really don't like their care. I've seen a lot of dead axolotls, and have had to tell them to fix many problems. They don't care for them correctly at all. I didn't know another store carried them. I'll have to go look into Caye's pets. I'm actually wondering if perhaps the two stores were stocked by the same company at some point? I have an axolotl that has a blotch on her head, you can her her in my album. She's not nearly as beautiful as yours, and not quite the same blotching.

I'll be working at Tropical Hut starting in January. Their axolotls are a range of sizes and ages now. Cannibalistic, yes, missing limbs, maybe. But still better cared for than Pets on Broadway, which doesn't seem to care when 3 or more of their axolotls are clearly dead in the water. They've started placing them in one of their goldfish tanks, with the fish removed. I can't even imagine the gross things left by the goldfish, I'm not surprised they keep losing their baby axolotls.

If you want more axolotls, I'd say suck it up on the higher pricing and buy from Tropical Hut or order on the forums. They don't do too badly. Better than going to Pets on Broadway. You should definitely look into breeding yours. Perhaps you can bring it out by breeding to another melanoid?

I'm sad to hear that Pets on Broadway doesn't care for them well enough. The male wild-type I purchased from Tropical Hut was in perfect condition. The ones that were damaged the most were the albinos and leucistics, which is understandable. I was going to get a melanoid, but it was 20 dollars more. The lady(woman/girl? I don't mean to sound rude, I just can't remember her age.) that I was talking to told me that they got all of them from a gravid female so I'm hoping mine has the gene for melanism. I'm just waiting for them to breed.

Yes, I remember the owner telling me theirs ended up breeding. There are a couple of workers there, so I wouldn't know who you're talking about, since they're all women, haha. I hope yours do breed. I'd like to be able to get some melanoids locally! I just lost a bunch of my axies from the ecoli problem in Tigard, so breed them quickly!

Will do. What size would you prefer them at? Just so I know when to contact you. I wouldn't want you waiting any longer than you had to.

I'll buy any size, or eggs even! Let me know if and when yours lay. It'll be easier because I can just do a pickup instead of mailing :)

Indubitably. I may not be able to offer you many eggs, but I'm sure almost all of the hatchlings will be for sale. Hopefully they'll be here soon!

I know little about axolotls but in mammals there are dilutes of colour genes-Could you ax be a dilute melanoid?I ask as the belly colour seems to be the same as the blotches/spots.
Just a suggestion.

The most I've bred mammals was when I had chinchillas, so I don't know much about the expression of genetics in mammals. By dilute colour gene, do you mean a co-dominant colour expression? I'm not sure if that is possible in axolotls (Other than in chimeras), but most melanoids I've seen have lighter bellies. However, if it were a dilute gene, wouldn't that mean that there would be blue axolotls out there?

~Anthony

Axolotl genetics are expressed as simple dominant. They don't have co- or incomplete dominant traits.

I just came across a video that showed another blue-spotted axolotl, and was wondering how I should go about showing everyone. Should I put the video into the thread, or put up a link to the video from here?

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
