Wow! Our Axolotl female is laying right now!

hi Ang- yours can't be that far off hatching!!
ours started hatching on day 13- mind you hubby had a heater in there so the eggs were at 23 degrees as well as the air pump thing bubbling away. Our kitchen looks like a mad scientist lab with the shrimp hatchery on top of the oven with a lamp over it. I am feeding hungry mum and dad axie and he is looking after the babies- they are so tiny i can barely see them but they are growing each day. The brine things are hatching every day coz of the warm temp. how many eggs have you got? We had about 30 and there are only about 10 babies-i will be amazed if we are left with any after reading how easily they die.

Lol Mary we have about 200 eggs! Hubby insisted we keep them all.... We have alot of friends wanting some, so hopefully we won't be over run. They are so cute, though, and we have a good butcher here, for their food, so I don't think there could be too many, they are so cute!

Our babies are growing fast, you can see their wee eyes now, and their tail are getting clear, it looks like they will all be white!

The tank is at 18 degrees, and we have 3 air stones going full time, because of the temp, they will take a few days longer.

10 days today.

How long did your brine shrimpery take to arrive?
Yours was a trademe one, wasn't it? I am worried ours might not arrive on time.

YAAY! UPDATE: The hatchery arrived today!! Really quick, as I paid for it on Friday!

Now I am more relaxed about the babies hatching, now we have food for them!

Two of the babies came out of their jelly when I was removing a dead egg that was growing an awful looking fungus with long hairs coming out of it, anyway, that was yesterday, and I thought they were dead, but this morning I disturbed the rocks next to them, and they very clumsily swam away, in a sort of spiral, will they survive?

Must be sexing season, we just had winter, axl has been really randy. the pet shop i go to has heaps theyre trying to get rid of - think i might go adopt another boy. I dont need babies. too much work. you guys have heaps of patience.

I had a gang of baby rats... they were so cute. but really annoying

The same happened to me. Seems that the critical part of development during the last days in the egg is the gills (at least that is what seems to change most)so the larvae may not be well equipped for life yet. Depends on how 'premmie' they are. The difficult thing is knowing when to start feeding them while the other eggs are still unhatched. They probably need something (BBS) within 2-3 days.

That's what I thought Deb, they have wee gills, and have lasted so far... we might seperate them from the others and put them in a container, just to see if we can save them, then we will know for next time.

Well, we have 12 hatched so far, and man they are fast!! I transferred them into the big tank today, which will be the 'nursery' they are so tiny!! One of them has a bent tail, and swims in a spiral!! He /she will be interesting if survives, if the tail doesn't straighten out!

Around 100 more hatched during the night, and they are looking fine, Have got the brine shrimpery on the go, and have bought a daphnia culture from trademe to start and have ready for them to wean on to.
