Woah!

Well, apparently I am non to good at rinsing sand. 4 Am and the water is still couldy, any suggestions? Thanks!

Ditto that *grin* I washed my sand twice and it took over a day to completely clear. Just wait it out, the filter will take care of it!

Alright the water is pretty freaking close to being clear. And my dad needs the bucket there in (dont ask me why we only have one bucket lol) Will it hurt them to put them in now? I mean the water is pretty close to completely clear. Thanks
Andrew

You don't have any other plastic containers? They don't need to be in deep water. Maybe an ice-cream container or so? I don't think it would kill them to go into the tank but maybe you could put them in a plastic bag with lots of water (like they do in pet shops when you buy them) for a few more hours.

Andrew - Test the water. If the ammonia is zero and nitrite is zero it is ok. If not, maybe its time you were a two bucket family

I have more buckets around than I really need. Any time you have an aquarium, always have at least 2 buckets that are designated as fish (or axie) only.

I've got 3 buckets, 5 rubbermaid dishes, 1 large rubbermaid tub, 3 milk jugs, and a buttload of plastic cups. In retrospect, when I move again, I need more buckets.

Days later the water is still cloudy with sand. and you know what i just realized it is? The air bubbler thing had a bunch of sand on top of it so it was string it up. Lol

RED ALERT! SO something has gone wrong with my axies. I have been changing there water in the bucket ever day but I woke up this morning and they look burnt kinda, WEIRD there not looking to good at all and im very worried about them. I feel so bad. On of them looks like he has scabs all over one side I dont get it. I barley put that water in so it should have been good. Well i split them all up in there own container. i guess i will see what happens.
Andrew

Andrew - Is this a new bucket? or the same bucket they have been in?

Are you sure you added dechlorinator?

They would be a little crowded in a bucket together. Perhaps they were biting each other?

When they get warm or stressed they turn red/pink in the tail section. It is very easy to see on light colored axolotls. Is that the "burnt kinda" you meant?

Same bucket, yes i put declorinator in. No they really look like there skin was burnt. I notice it on 2 and one is really worse than the other. There was also brown stuff *poo, throw up?* all over in the water I put them in fresh water in the fridge and I think there starting to look better

The messy poo, I hate when that happens. Keep a close eye on them you might need to change the water 2 times a day if they continue to be messy.

Andrew, why do you still have them in the buckets? I thought the fungus had cleared up, the sand has settled now - whats the ammonia, nitrite levels like?
Are there any sharp edges in the buckets? - I know it sounds stupid but run your hand around on the inside and see if there is any sharp plastic which might be injuring them.
As for the burning - I have absolutely no idea what that could be. Three in a bucket - ammonia from waste perhaps if the water level is too low??

The water clouded again... Waiting it out, just want the best water quality for my little guys. I no longer have any test strips and I have like a $.25 total so I just want to make sure and let the tank cycle for a little while *as i removed the big rocks and replaced them with sand*

Hi Andrew,
Looking burnt sounds like hemmorhagic septicemia to me. Keeping them in a bucket is o.k. but it can be harder to maintain water quality in a bucket. I would sooner keep them in a tank with a decent low flow biological filter and do big water changes. The water quality will be better in the tank even if it hasn't cycled and the axys will bounce back if not to far gone. I recommend treating them with furan 2 at 1/2 to full strength.
It seems we have been stuck on this tank cycling issue. It is important to biologically balance an aquarium. We have to avoid keeping axolotls in less than optimum conditions while that o.k. tank sits their. An overloaded tank will need more partial water changes but it will cycle. Using a bucket can be risky. Some nasty release agents are used in manufacturing plastics. It is best to use items that are food safe or recommended for live animals to hold our animals.
It's tough to say what caused the problem. I've found that the two biggest problems with axolotls are water quality and temperature.
Feel free to email me privately or call. I've got lots of vacation projects and should pry myself from the internet.

Um, okay something is very wrong with my water. My Axolotls are still not in my tank but when i woke up this morning there is the brown stuff all over the bottom of the tank again, what I thought was something that had come out of them. its like little piles of brownish powdery-goo all over! They havn't been in the tank since i sucked it up last time! What is this?

Andrew - Could you take a water sample to a pet store and have them test it for you?

Where did you get the sand that you used? Could the "brownish powdery goo" be just the gunk settling out of your tank water, or the sand? You did just change substrates and that stirs up everything.

How do your axolotls look today?

Eh... not to good. I took the water down to the petstore today and everything checked out fine. http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441781393&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030109&bmUID=1120069222315
I used the white version of that sand. Im a little creeped out by the stuff on the bottom of the tank, theres alot of it now, it seems like its mulitplying. Its definatly not sand. But it dosn't seem to be moving, just there is more and more of it all the time.
