Who is your favorite famous biologist?

I find this such an amusing question. I never considered having a "favorite biologist." It's like "who's your favorite forensic entymologist/serial killer/famous clown." But I am enjoying the answers!

not sure if hes a biologist but the crocodile hunter, the one who was killed my the sting ray, hes the one who really actually made me want to keep animals, i remember watching his show every time it came on :)

David Suzuki was always great and still is. "Nature of Things" was a great show and it had longevity. Scientific broadcaster, environmental activist and naturalist. Not sure if he had a biological degree of some sort but I always saw him as a biologist.

Attenborough is legend! His 1st pet was Fire Salamander!

All of the above plus Miguel Alvarez del Toro (Mexico) and Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente (Spain). Also George Page.

Spanish people have long names... I would like a Spanish name. How about, Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez? Just don't chop off my head!

Well, since I got dragged into this, and then disqualified, I thought it only appropriate to point out that David Attenborough has a Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences. I too have a Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences, not Chemistry. So why can't I be a biologist too? I will grant you that my Fud is in Chemistry though.

I am a big Gerald Durrell fan. "My family and other animals" meant a lot to me when my aunt gave me that book at the age of 10.

I really had you for a chemist xD Sorry for that.

Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente was a very inspiring figure of my youth (and he was from Burgos too), but as i grew up i found that he wasn´t as admirable as i was made to believe....quite frankly i don´t really like him anymore :S

I always found it hilarious that Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez has one too many surnames and an unnecessary composite. Sean connery´s accent is priceless, though...so i can ignore the surname issues.

I have to say, i´ve never been able to stand Steve Irwin...i just can´t watch his stuff. I don´t need constant sensationalistic shouting to be fascinated by a living thing, thanx.

otterwoman might get a little kick out of this post. I'm going to college right now for entomology. And I guess one of my favorite biologists (ok he's an entomologist but it still counts) would be Aaron Gassman. He is doing research on the corn rootworm beetle resistance to Bt corn. Plus he's pretty awesome :)

ditto. Hopping up and down in front of animals and provoking them to snap at you has about as much to do with biology as screaming at the top of your lungs with opera singing.....

I totally agree! He was brave but it was too much for me. He was good at disturbing/wrangling animals.......

He falls into the same category as Timothy Treadwell, the bear-stalker in Alaska who ended up as a bear snack.

All the passion and love for animals (which I understand), but refusing to see the animals for what they truly are and failing to respect their nature and their personal space...

Exactly! Thats why I never watched his show. I like watching crocodilians make nests, protecting their young and perform mating calls bubbling the water. But seeing a man wrestle a crocodile gets old fast. People ate that up like Mcdonalds though......

I enjoy watching Dr. George Magavin he is an entomologist who has worked on program's for the BBC like Experdition Burneo, Lost Land of the Jaguar, Lost Land of the Volcano, & Lost land of the Tiger. All great and informative viewing.

Jane Goodall is pretty cool. I went to a lecture by her and she opened by greeting us in chimpanzee! But, my absolute favourite is Konrad Lorenz.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
