What's everyones favorite substrate?

there is no control, lol
the only thing I do is use a thooth brush to remove some of it when it gets really long
just swirl it around in th floating algae and it is pretty easy to remove
Im just lucky its all hair algae and not BGA or something worse lol

I use sand, it looks good but it can get really dirty after a while, even with regular cleaning.
Recently saw some pictures of a fake grass substrate that makes the axolotls look like some sort of terrestrial herbivore on a distant planet!

I really want a slate bottom in my new tank, but I'm completely oblivious as to how I would go about doing that. Do you just go to a hardware store and buy a couple pieces? Do you have to get them cut, etc? Should you glue them down with silicone?

I've never had a slate bottom but from what I understand you probably would want to silicone it down at least around the edges to make it easier to vacuum out poo. Maybe someone who has done this will chime and in say for sure.

I love this! I was planning on having a bare bottom tank, but I might steal this idea. How did you make this? Just add silicon to the bottom of the tank and sprinkle sand on top? I love the look of sand, but cleaning it is a pain for me. I have sand in my saltwater tank that's covered in blue green algae and red algae thy my crabs an snails refuse to eat. Isn't that the point of a clean up crew?

My favourite is sand. Although if I redo my tank in the future (won't be for while yet) I would change the colour choice of my sand. Currently I have a mix of both red and black sand. I like the look of it but axie poo hides in it so well as it blends in! If I redo the tank I will probably get a more natural colour sand I think

Fake grass/Astroturf is the way to go

It looks amazing, is easy to clean, doesn't shed or leach, and my lotls have seemed happy walking around on it since I got them at about 3 months old.
