what fish will do well with firebellys?

Oh? There is no fish that will eat until its stomach bursts. White cloud minnows will eat some of the newts' food, but they don't really eat very much.

I agree that feeding the newts from a dish on land is probably not going to work.

And I agree that ghost shrimp are OK with newts. But in my experience they don't live very long.

I meant figurativley.

I tried putting very small guppies, only 1-3 in with some frogs I had before, to try to keep the tank clean. They would eat an astonishing amount of food and were able to swoop right to it, sometimes even trying to take it out of the frogs mouth.

Most newts live in ponds (or vernal pools) with few or no fish. Also, there are very few fish that tolerate the COLD temperatures that are very healthy for newts.

I had guppies with newts several years ago. When I went on vacation in winter, I turned down the thermostat, and I came home to find all the guppies dead. The newts loved the cooler house, but the guppies didn't. The only fish I use now is the white cloud minnow. See:

They look a little bit like neon tetras. I like them a lot.

Not all newts need cold water temp.
I have a Chinese warty paddletail newt, a catfish, a Peacock eel and a Spotted Puffer fish all living Happily toghether for over three months! Water temp is at 78 and I feed them frozen blood worms and brine shrimp and fish pellets. Nobody is trying to eat eachother. The only thing I worry about is the puffer nipping but so far so good. The newt is very happy and active.

Three months is nothing. Newts have a lifespan of 20+ years. Yours might survive several more months under the conditions you have, but it will die long before it's normal lifespan.

Spotted puffers also require a brackish set-up
