Vomiting axie

I tried posting this in live food etc but no one replied.... so I thought I might have more luck here.
My axolotls have been loving the white worms I've been feeding them, and are now of a size where they seem to be big enough to eat baby tiger worms from my composting worm farm, so I gave some to them last night, one gobbled his/her one down in an instant, the others seemed not to like them, and spat them out. Then a couple of hours later the one who had eaten the worm started vomitting! Any ideas why? The worms seemed to have dirt in their tummies, as worms do, would that have made the axie sick? But if that is so, I don't understand how they could eat earth worms at all....

Axolotls usually vomit when they have eaten too much.

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get axolotls to accept a new food. You might try cutting up a small earth worm and feeding it in small pieces instead of whole.

If they don't like the worms now, don't give them any food for a couple of days, then give them the worms again. They're a lot less picky when they're really hungry ;)

My axolotls were the same. I cut the worms in half and they accepted them. When they were whole my axies snapped at them but couldn't swallow them.

I tried cutting up some worms but they still didn't eat them, starvation treatment coming up... if I can bear it, they're only babies so at the moment they're eating twice a day... I'd feel so mean....

How small are they? Perhaps you should try frozen blood worms instead.

The biggest is about 10cm the smallest is about 5cm, I tried one of the bigger ones on a tiny piece of earthworm, and it seems okay so far!

They are still pretty small. I would feed them on frozen blood worms and maybe even some brine shrimp on the smaller ones.

yesterday i moved one of my axy to a new tank[tall30cm width30cm long120cm and there is chiller in it,temparature is 21 celcious] i fed her some food before[sinking pellet and dried shrimp] moving her in to the tank then after 24 hour or more than that she puked,it seem like it hasn't been digested at all.today i moved the other axy which fed the same time as the first axy but this one was not puke the old food but this one puke the new food that i fed her today before moving her.i think when they are in new tank they can't digest i don't know why but both of them look nervous and not secure may be because of the daylight.please help thank.

Kungfoi - it is probably just because of the stress of being moved. But keep a close eye on them.

thank you so much cynthia.
i noticed that my white axy her gill are smaller is it bad or not?

I'd say for their size just use the frozen bloodworms. i feed my axie redworms and he is about 5inches, when I first started feeding him them I would have to cut them in half to make him eat them anyways.

Are their gills a lot smaller do they still have filaments?

Do you have more aeration in the new tank? This could cause gill shrinkage. Are they eating normally yet?

yes i think because i move her from bucket that didn't have anything.and the first axy that i move in the new tank now she look fine but only her gills are smaller the other puked again after i fed her.

Try not feeding them for a few days, and then just feeding them a little bit of food, maybe half of their normal amount.

thank joan but what about her gills now they are smaller a lot.i love her gills i don't want her gills gone.

You don't have much of a choice. It's usually due to a combination of genetics, aeration, and temperature. You can't just force them to have big gills. Sorry.

kungfoi - have your axolotls had an opportunity to eat gravel or rocks? They might be puking because they have a stone they are trying to work back up.

Gills will shrink because of poor water quality, stress and of course illness.

You just moved them to a new tank and they are stressed, keep a close eye on the water quality. Once they are settled in their gills can become big and fluffy again.

I have a newsletter from the axolotl colony that contains a very good reference piece called "practical axolotl" on page 17. It is in PDF form so you will need acrobat reader to view it. You can (hopfully)download a copy by clicking this link:
