Illness/Sickness: Urgent: swollen head

Such a fantastic result! : ) And I ADORE those photographs. She's a beauty. They both are.

Burrito's head lump is back :( My local vet has agreed to see her this time as I'm worried further bus journeys could finish her off. She seemed fine yesterday, and today she's got a big cone head again. I could cry. It cost me almost £100 last time including bus fares....

=( I hope your local vet is able to get hold of the antibiotics again, or be able to so SOMETHING to help. At least that saves you both the stress of travel! Poor, poor Burrito. Rooting for her.

Baytril is actually widely available. He cured one of my guinea pigs' abscesses with it a few years ago. However I'm now reading absolutely EVERYTHING I can find on antibiotics and amphibians as one article says that although it is the most widely used for them Baytril is not the most suitable. I'm printing out everything I can find for him to look at and really hope he's prepared to give treating her a go....

I and all my furry and slimey house mates have our respective appendages crossed for you xx

Oh poo :( that sucks for Burrito!
He's already gone through so much.

At least there was a little time between treatments so burrito has had a chance to recuperate before round 2.

I will keep cheering for Burrito & keeping everything crossed.

Keep strong we're all sending
you both our best wishes &
lotl love from the crew x x x

Thanks everyone. Not sure if he will consult with the other vet- I don't think he's going to be that pleased to see me to be honest. He is a brilliant vet and I completely trust him- I've been going there for 20 years, but he is not experienced with exotics. If it wasn't for the stressful bus journey I'd take her back to the other place- and still may have to if my vet is not comfortable treating her. I've written down the treatment used by the other vet, and printed the picture of the injection site for axolotls that I found on this site.

I've been lying awake worrying for hours and suddenly realised that the day before the swelling started she had her first bit of prawn for ages. I know this might sound a bit weird, but I'm wondering if there's any way she could be allergic to prawn??

"Symptoms range from itching and swelling of the mouth and throat (oral allergy syndrome) to life threatening reactions."

She was fine with them when she was younger, but apparently in humans shellfish allergy is far more common in adults. I'm unsure whether the swelling from an allergy could have the pus that was present in Burrito's head though....

Just got back and my lovely local vet is going to do everything he can for her. He confirmed that allergic reactions don't result in pus, and is confident that the Baytril used before is just not a powerful enough drug. He's going to start her on on a course of a different antibiotic tomorrow- we couldn't start today as it needs to be given every 48 hours. Even though he has no experience with axolotls I trust him completely- I used to go and help out at his surgery when I was a student and have been going there for 20 years. I'd actually trust him with my own life! So much less stressful for Burrito and I to take a 5 minute walk down the road as opposed to a 20 minute bouncy bus ride!
