Unusual Axolotls - how do I get them?

My tank is literally full of plants and hiding places. I even considered moving some plants to my fish tank because the Axies would not have enough room to move around. So I definitely have enough hiding places and plants, and I am thinking of getting a weak UV light, and only turn it on for 5 minutes once in a while, if the Axies are not stressed by it. Thanks to all who responded.

I have been thinking about this and decided that I will just not even bother to look for a gfp axolotl because it seems to be stressful to them.

I don't know if you are aware, but they do seem to show a faint glow under regular lighting, and their eyes will be green I believe. I'm not too familiar about them but I was reading up a bit since posting on this thread. UV light and black lights I believe are the same so they would most likely stress the axolotl. Out of all the light options, besides regular white light, it seems blue light would be the next best thing. I wasn't able to find anything negative this time and my experiences were positive. I'm not sure if anyone else has any knowledge on blue light (I used a car LED strip), but I couldn't find anything myself.

Thanks, just looked at some other caudata.org posts and I think it is okay to use blue moonlight LEDs. Thanks.

In regards to wild types, they tend to look more light green when they are juveniles and then when they become adults, the skin does darken.

I have seen the glow in the dark ones but they were genetically modified and thus be prone to genetic defects. Seriously who has time to stress for a genetically modified one when the normal ones sometimes stress us out already when they get sick??

Here is a picture of an enigma axolotl I found on the web.

Yeah that is a tiger salamander larvae, and the picture was taken by the founder of this site...

See, you could just buy a tiger salamander larvae ( CB ) instead of a enigma axolotl, and it would probably cost you less.

The enigma isn't wild colored. It's actually a harlequin/leucist that acts on iridophores.
Don't Quite know how to breed a purple but i suspect it has something to do with a deep blue melanoid that's crosses with a wild type to recreate that fluorescent purple look.

Agreed - it's just a wildtype with distinctive colouring. I have one very similar.

Copper is a simple 2-part gene that works exactly the same way as albino. Coppers are becoming more common though, it won't be that hard to find them.
GFP is even simpler - it's just a yes or no gene, and the are pretty common in the USA.

TBH most 'unusual' colours - like the enigma - are just an ordinary axie with unique colouring. Whether it's a slight purple tint, an abundance of iridophores or excessive dark spots on a leucistic, someone just gives it a fancy name and charges twice (or triple etc) the price.

I joked that my pale wildtypes with brown spots should be marketed as 'chocolate chip' axolotls and my golden albinos should be called '24 carat' axies and sold at £50 each....

I totally agree with you,
but you should still remember that it's not the name that makes them that value, it's the rareness of the creatures.

i know how to breed enigmas and anyone who wants to know can ask lol.

Do you have pictures of your enigmas? from everything i've found the only recorded enigma axolotl was bred by Jay Sommers and he gave it that name. Right now I believe he also breeds coppers and purple axolotls as well as all other color types. His enigma sold years ago for over a thousand

I don't have my own enigmas yet but i do know how to breed them and soon i will. To breed an enigma you just need to have a leucistic who either has harlequin traits or carries it in it's genes, breed this with a iridophoric (dark) wildcolor and you'll have a chance of breeding one. But note that strong iridophores are a must.

And you're right about jay except for the fact that it's not the only one he bred, hè had more

And well he's not the only one either lol, just not everybody calls them enigmas
