The danders of Otocinclus Please read!

Ye, my snails eat my plants more than my algae. My mystery snails eat some of the algae but mosly cow down on my plants that where magnificent when i got them and now they're almsot gone. But i dont minds that much, lol.

my ol snaily loves shrimp pellets! when hes snailing along the side of the tank i drop them down the side of the glass and he muches away on them.
he does nothing for my brown algae- i dont think theres really much to it, its just like a brown stain on the glass, and its a mission to get off so i imagine he would have a hard time!

Lol when hes snailing along, i like that on. YOu recon mine would like pellets too if a droped on infront of him path when his on the floor.

My snails only climb the glass at night, never suring the day. During the day the climb the rocks and plants. They have this huge tenticle at the side (no its not there antana) i think its there genitals but its bloddy huge like 6cm when fully extended.

no its their breathing stick (i dont know its real name) my one goes up to the surface sometimes, sticks his stick out and makes little movements then lets go and falls to the bottom...

try feeding your snail, something soft though!

lo, mine do the same, i got soem baby snails and i didnt even see any eggs on the tank. I think there is 4 but the magicly disapear sometimes then pop out at randome times, lol. One is about 1cm big and the rest (i think theres 2 more) are 1-2mm.

Ahh my spelling sucks, lol. I type extreemly fast and always get the letters jumbled up as im practicing to use the keyboard without looking.

Hey guess what, i walked into the room, turned on the light, and i saw my snails on the glass. I went up for a clsoer look adn i could see them eating the algae on the glass. There mouths are like these cracks but when they open up a circle toung thing comes out with a semi-circle teeth structure taht was scraping the algae or wat ever off.

stipe, snails come out in the dark. turn the light out for an hour or so then turn it on and they should all be out feeding on the algea. i have these random snails that came with a plant i bought and i always see them out at night when i turn the light on.

what kind of snails have you got?. i cant find a pet store around here that sells any snails at all, about a year ago was when i saw one apple snail for sale but thats it!.

i have 2 yellow mystery snails, i got the two for $8au here at a pet shop.

breathing siphon. You snail eats with a radula, basically two mouth parts that look kind of like velcro, but work against each other like sand paper (rasping). I suspect you could have two or more species of apple snail if you've gone ones eating the algae (which should NOT be their main source of food) and the plants (vast majority of apple snails eat plants). www.applesnail.net for more info.

Pleurodeles walt and fish....
Posted by Al on November 08, 2001 at 16:45:27:

I tried to cut feeding expenses and started using feeder fish (rosies) for my Spanish Ribbed newts. I lost 3-4 newts from bloat or disease. The only source that I could trace this to is the feeder fish. I also tried to add corey cats (fish) to eat the left over waste in my pleurodele tank. My reasoning was to keep a well balance tank and decrease need for water changes (these newts are big eater and poopers). By day 2, I noticed one of my breeding females had eaten one of the fish...but it got stuck in her mouth. Most fish have sharp fins. The newt suffered mouth lacerations and developed a nasty infection and died several weeks later, despite antibiotic therapy.

health warning
Posted by Michael on June 22, 2001 at 17:56:36:

Please pass on the info that any algae eaters or others of the catfish family have spines in the fins that are deadly to anthing eating them. They lodge in the throat, piercing and ripping. I lost a dear little 10 year old Fire Belly Newt (Wayne) when I didn't know of the spines and added a small algae eater to the aquarium. Wayne died 2 days later with the fish impaling his throat. The vet could not help him. Please pass the word to pet stores and others.

All of my snails, the big black ones, ate algea and everything else and would move through the tank faster then a newt can walk taking off the algae. However, they all died withen a year when they got big enough. every sail i have had has done this, must be old age.
