Hi Mina,
I am not familiar right off hand with the filter that you are referring to. Also you did not mention which species that you keep but newts in general can squeeze into incredibly tight spaces. Is there a link to a photo?

Hi, I have been looking at this filter too. Here is a link to a retailer offering it for sale. http://www.animalworldnetwork.com/tederewa.html
I have used filter material to cover the intake of my filters before and just planned on some on this filter.
I have bought a large roll of a white mesh (one inch thick) filter material from a Koi pond supplier. You can get it in different grades to let only small particles thru or larger particles. I use it in my Koi pond to cover the pump intake. I have started using it in my aquariums to cover the pump intake on them too after I had a newt stuck in one of my pumps. I have not had a problem since (just keep in on with a rubber band). Check any of your local garden supply stores that carry garden pond supplies.
