Thanks for answers

I'm not an expert in paramesos but this is how I keep my p. laoensis and I reckon it should be okay for your guanxiensis.
Cheers

They are basically very unfussy in their p[references. Just make sure the water is clean (they come from the slow-moving areas of streams and rivers mostly) with some fairly tight hiding places. Mine like flat rocks piled to create caves and overhangs.
Those insulation bricks in Francesco's tank would be fine as well, providing the holes are big enbough for the animals to fit into comfortably.

I would differ from Francesco in using an inch or so of sand as a substrate, and planting Valisineria (spelling??) - provided with enough light this will spread via rhizomes and create a 'thicket' which the animals will use both to hide in and to lay eggs if they breed.

SOrry I don't have any pictures - I'll try to get hold of a camera to get a couple.

hi again thanks for the tips but I realized (with some help) that my newt is actually a P. Hongkongensis... Is there any difference?

By the way it's a six-edged aquarium it looks like this:

this is a very old picture..

+++ jpeg +++ 75737 +++ +++

now I have a plant too. I shall describe what it looks like on the outside: A paper-hat shaped after the tank with a hole in the centre.. It was already there when I bought it so I kept it there as a lid. Then I have papers with painted backgrounds on the inside surrounding the aquarium so that it get's more dark. Well and inside I have two rocks with one large flat rock on top creating a cave, then a pot with some large gravel and a plant inside (she LOVES to lie there, then a larger pump, and a flat bowl which I lay the food on. well other than that I have gravel and some large smooth rocks here and there...:p

okay, thanks. how high can the water level be? and can I have a plastic toy in there? I found a really cute mouse with a cheese.. I cleaned it very carefully with veeery hot water.

The tank looks nice. The plastic is probably OK, but if the toy has a squeeker inside, it could rust and that's not good. I have 2 other precautionary items. One, do you have a secure lid on the tank (when not taking photographs)? Be sure the gaps around the cords are well sealed. Two, feed the newt by hand, or in the area without gravel. It is possible that a newt can eat a piece of stone and die this way. There are some "wrong sized" pebbles in there. This is unlikely to cause a problem, but you never know.

The water level looks good, but it could be higher, up to 25+ cm is OK, as long as there are still islands. My hongkongensis loves to sit in a cave that is half-full of water (the cave sits on a submerged rock near the surface).

okay thanks for the tips^^ and no, there is not a squeeker inside, it's a pen-holder but it hasn't been used. Yes, I have a lid, a "hat" in paper with a hole in the centre, so she gets air but can't escape. (they can't climb upside-down can't they?) and what is a pebble? is it the small stones, or the larger ones?
About the water level, my newt doesn't swim a lot, (mainly because she is slow.. hmm)
is it still okay to raise the water level? sorry for all these questions:p but my aquarium has six edges and it's quite difficult to swim in there:p and what is a "submerged" stone?

I hope you don't get sick from all these questions:p I hope you answer fast;) thank you!

by the way I saw that tank with the "turtle-pot"(really cute) and I was just wondering.. The two pots with a plant saucer on top, can I maybe use that in my aquarium? But with only one pot? I don't have room for two :p

I checked the water level I have now and it's about 14 cm.

Yes, you can make the water a little deeper.

Newts can crawl upside-down for a short distance (sometimes their feet are a bit sticky). Don't take any chances with escape; better safe than sorry. Do you have a photo of your lid?

Yes, you could put a saucer on top of one pot. But you would need to be very careful not to bump the saucer off when cleaning.

Pebble = small stone. Any small stone that is the right size to fit in the newt's mouth is the wrong size to have in the tank.

I took a photo of my hongkongensis tank, but I need to get it from the camera to show you. Later...

okay I shall remove all the small stones. I have had the same "hat"(it goes over the edges too, like 10sm or so) for two years now and I think it's safe, because it must be difficult to climb on a cardboard-like materia upside-down. Hmm.. now I only need to find a saucer haha! Uhm my tank is quite small, so if I'm going to make room for a saucer I probably have to take the pump out. Do I really need a pump? I have room for a total of 31 liters.

I took a picture today of the whole tank with the hat. I can't upload it today unfortunatly..

I'm going to raise the water tonight and we'll see how it goes ;)

Here are 2 photos of my small hongkongensis tank. The newt spends 95% of his time in the "log cave" (on top of the brick), with his body in the water, but near the surface.

The tank has a heater, but it is unplugged! It was there from last winter, used for a different species. I am too lazy to take it out. The temperature is about 17C.

Sorry for the poor photos.

I would say you do not need the pump. Do you have an air pump? If so, you could use just an air bubbler.

I really like your tank! The flower is very beautiful. But I can't see the newt?

Well well, It is a pump that cleans the water and... spit it out haha sounds wierd. Well I figured out I was too tired to do something tonight so I'll fix it tomorrow :p.

alright, the things I'm going to do: Take out the.. pebbles?, turn the pot upside-down, put a saucer on top of the pot, take out the pump, find a place to have my plant on, raise the water level.. yeah that's about it.
Shall I take out Candy while I'm fixing everything? She might be stressed otherwise?

Hello again.^^ okay so this is what I did:
* Turned the pump the other way so now it is like a water fall.
* Fixed a round stone (looks like an egg) that is next to the pump so Candy can climb up there.
* I raised the water level.
* I didn't take out the pebbles because it would mean lots of work and I remembered that I've had these pebbles for two-three years now so;)

I will put some pictures up soon, just have to convince my brother to help me again:p

I'm so happy because Candy swims more now^^ she tries to jump first and when it doesn't work she swims ;D

My dad is going to buy some sort of "cork"-island that I can decorate myself with.. moss and that kind of stuff.
