Hi everybody, I was curious what you guys think about the gills on my axolotl, Onyx. Onyx hasn't shown any signs of stress except how excessively forward her gills are? They're also super nice and fluffy which I thought was a good thing until doing further research on it last night and worrying myself even further.

The levels in the tank are within the proper parameters (I'm new to the axolotl thing so I check A LOT), the temperature maintains fairly steadily around 65°F and if it goes up it's usually only about 3° at which point I'll use a fan to bring the temperature down to around 63°.

The filter flow doesn't seem to bother Onyx. I have a single bubbler but she seems to love it. She has no problem eating and she seems very responsive to me and "happy" despite the gills. Oh, and her tail is not curved at the tip.

I'd love input! I worry myself over Onyx all the time making sure she's being taken care of properly and has a good life. I also chose to post here because people seem more genuinely helpful than on Reddit who seem to think you're intentionally abusing your pet😅

By the way, I attached some pictures of Onyx when I first got her as reference.

due to the length of the gills any water movement will cause them to bend, unless the gills are pulled forward as if to cover the face the curls can be due to length rather than stress.
try to reduce the temperature to 15°c/59°f - 18°c/64°f (ideal temperatures, 15°c/59°f being best), warmer water also holds less oxygen.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
