Get a Tokay Gecko! They work great as free roamers lol! Eat any insects they find

Wow, a Gecko - reminds me of when I was in Bali and my mum pulled the curtains and one jumped on her head! I have never heard anyone scream so loud, and for so long! hahaha!

Are Geckos okay on carpet, and how far do they walk around. What sort of stuff do you need for them? On second thoughts, maybe I should just ask if there is a Gecko forum!

My boyfriend came over last night and was watching my girls, saying, I just want to pat them! So he would probably love a gecko!

not sure if I told you all, but my Chiller arrived the other day! I'm so anxious b/c I can't put it together until my dad gets back from interstate on Monday. I need to get some tubing and stuff and he's worked out a way to connect it all up.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. Hope you're not getting too bored with all my proud mum piccies! hehe

Okay, I take that back about my boyfriend being able to touch the gecko. I just did a quick google, and I am definately not getting a Tokay gecko, quite frankly, I'd rather have a cricket running around my room, and that's saying something!

I got this from this website (http://www.anapsid.org/tokays.html)

"Despite the fact that they follow human habitation, finding human dwellings to be great places to find prey, Tokays are the least lovable of the geckos. They are known for their nasty temperament, cheerfully biting the hand that feeds, cleans or otherwise comes into anything resembling close proximity to them. Their bites are powerful--one might say they are the pit bulls of the gecko world...they hang on and let go only when it suits them. Equipped as they are with numerous sharp teeth, the bites can bleed profusely and, even barring subsequent infection, are annoying for days."

So, are there any nice geckos that might eat my crickets?

Yeah, Tokays are evil. Maybe a little non-venomous snake? You've got the singular pleasure of living in Australia, so you have to be sure there are things you can get locally, as you can't import anything. Look around at the pet shops and see what they have, then look that up online to get an accurate representation of what the animal actually is.

Are you serious about letting animals go in your house? That sounds crazy.

I was just reading an article about a Queensland Common house gecko found with 5 tails. No pic though. I'm not that well versed with Australian cities/provinces (states?, I don't even know that much!), so I don't know if you have those there or what. I know in most tropical places, geckos are all over the place. My sister lived in hawaii for a time and was telling me about the two geckos on her wall, and when she came back from the kitchen, there was one fat gecko...

lol Casey! Tokay Geckos aren't exactly human friendly, but they are good little hunters. I can see why you wouldn't want one though lol! I got bit pretty badly by one and my hand bled so... lol.

I have an African Fat Tailed Gecko, but he lives in a tank. His name is Cookie and he loves Crickets which I dust with REPTECAL so he can get his vitamins and calcium. I also add drops of nutrients in his water dish. He has a roommate, a Leucistic Leopard Gecko female Named Lullabelle Gretchen. Cookie is just about the sweetest little Fatty around, and Lullabelle Gretchen is well... rather snoody and crabby, but she's still very pretty and my two Gecks love one another lol. Here are some pictures. I would let them run around in the house, but we have cats, so I can't.

Casey,

I don't know about Vic, but in NSW we have to have a licence to keep em...I got mine and still haven't got any running round the house! lol.

Took me a while to get over being squemish about feeding worms to my axie...let alone trying to feed a lizard....At least I know my axie won't try to take my arm off! lol.....

OMG Rheann! I love him! I'm guessing that the top two pics are Cookie! He's fantastic - looks much more friendly than the Tokay gecko!

The fat-tail and leucistic ones look quite okay as "housepets" from what I've read.

Suzanne, you're probably right about the licence. Vic is pretty strict with stuff like that, I think, although you don't need a licence to keep a tortoise.

I think that you should need a licence to keep an axolotl, that is, with all the stuff you need to know about them, but then again, there's no licence required to have a child, so perhaps it's not really about the care required.

I'm kind of thinking about down the track - I don't think my mum would really let me have a gecko running around the house. I plan to have a big house of my own one day, with a room full of animal tanks and cages, with a door on it of course, and then I could have whatever I wanted in there!

Rheann, are your geckos harder to take care of than axies?

BTW, Joan, there is no way I'm getting a snake! I know some people love them, but they really give me the creeps, I don't care if they're non-venomous!

I think it comes from watching the Jungle Book too many times, and that snake was just evil - I can't even remember his name, as I was so scared by him, I've blocked it from my memory.

Why is it always my threads that go off topic? I'm such a digresser *sigh*

Shir Khan. I always thought he was kinda cool. Very sneaky.

You'd get a gecko, but not a snake? Snakes are just lizards without legs. Some of 'em even HAVE legs (think boas with their little vestigial 'spurs', the remnants of legs).

To each their own, I guess.

My mom doesn't like Snakes, Lizards, and I have a feeling she won't like Axolotls either when she comes down from Montana and visits me and sees my huge tank with 6 of them inside! She'll probably freak, even though she's seen pictures of Moon Cookie and said "Oh that's cute" But that's about it. She hasn't seem them in person yet, so we'll see how that goes

Lets all hope also that none of them will be sick at that time and be hanging out in the fridge. She'll probably have a heart-attack!

The snake was called Kaa
Shere Khan was the tiger.

Your duo look lovely (just to comment on the topic) *cough* *cough*

Going off topic is easy in a free flowing exchange of information and ideas

Right, Jeff. Sorry. To think, I was just watching that a few days ago...

Rheann, my mom doesn't like anything that's not cute and fluffy. But if your mother doesn't like them, then her sense of what is beautiful's a little skewed

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
