Snail in tank

thats good to hear!

Airwen, you seem to have a good knowledge of aquatic snails so:

I have two Pomacea Canaliculata (I believe) in my tank. I feed them lettuce, cucumber and carrot and was wondering if all green vegetables are okay to feed them. Any help would be appreciated.

I hope you got them all then! Just to make sure, take it out during the day and put it back in overnight for a day or two.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Canas are illegal in Australia? I'll have to check on that but I remember reading that Australia has insane (but understandable) rules on snails, especially the plant-eating ones like Canas who can get into crops.

As for the food issue, check that site I posted. They love most green veggies, but some are possible calcium "blockers" that prevent the absorption of calcium, which is critical to shell growth and maintenance. Some of these "bad" foods are broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach. They'll do fine on the diet you're feeding them though. If you're not adding a calcium supplement to your tank (Kent Marine Liquid Calcium, cuttlebone, crushed coral as a substrate, or even crushed eggshells) then try feeding them calcium-rich foods such as kale as well.

is cuttlebone that stuff you feed birds? a big white thing?

Well i guess i missed a few snails, i now have about 20 tiny ones on the glass

guttered. i have put about 20 ramshorn snails in my axie tank and the most iv seen at one time is 4?!?. does anybody know if my axies ate them or if they are just really good at hiding.

Aww man, keep at it!

Yup, cuttlebone is sold as a calcium supplement for birds. Just break off a chunk and drop it in the water.

Alex - I'm not sure about axies with snails, but it's possible they ate them. Of course, with small snails like Rams, they could be hiding, or buried in the gravel, etc.

Thanks for the tips Airwen. I was going on my own identification which obviously was a bit shoddy. I had no idea Canas were illegal in Australia but are other snails from the Genus Pomacea legal? I am pretty sure its from that genus.

I will try adding cuttlebone.

omg! reading this scares me - help over here please LOL

I found 1 in my tank yesterday. ITS THAT SMALL THAT I MISTOOK IT FOR PART OF THE AXIE POOP!

Ive taken it out and have it in a wine glass (poor mum dealing with a snail in her wine glass) - LOL its tiny, i wont be able to see it in anything bigger. I had to hold it infront of the light (through the wine glass) so i could see the damn thing! Its that small that l cant even see where the shell begins.

Anyhow, my question behind this post is... Does one tiny, freshly hatched, baby looking snail mean that there will DEFINATELY BE MORE??

I have read in this thread that it could have hitched a ride with a plant (which is possible as l recently bought a new plant - & yes the plant was in a tank WITH snails at the pet shop).. but because it looks so tiny - im thinking there are eggs somewhere and this is the only one..
# 1) Hatched OR
# 2) That l can see at the moment

Maybe l should try the cuccumber thing and see what that gets me?
??

(sorry about the long post, l just know nothing about snails and dont particularly want them - LOL too late i guess)

One snail does not necessarily mean there are more, but the trend is, if you've gotten one hitch-hiker on a plant, there's likely more.

Try the cucumber. You'll get a definite answer that way.

All I could find after a short bit of research is that P. Canaliculata is illegal to import. However, I also found some interesting information around here:

http://pestalert.applesnail.net/

Things like Canas are illegal to own in Texas and California, at least. You may want to poke around that site and the internet to try to get some info.

Jojo- I have pulled a single snail off a new plant before - so don't worry about it too much, it's just a snail.

Just try to see if you can find anymore.

Cheers guys! Was just stressing abit too much LOL
