Illness/Sickness: Sick Paddletail newt

Getting a biopsy/culture would not be that difficult for vets, even if they don't have much experience with amphibians and reptiles. Most vets can send off samples to external veterinary laboratories for testing. A lot of vets end up learning through communicating with others about techniques.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I'd just like to let you know that you could probably fill your tank all the way to the top with water. As far as I understand it, paddletail newts are fully aquatic. At least I've only ever seen one out of the water once, and it was in a tiny tank with a bunch of others and had a fungus. But then when I got it (I didn't know it had a fungus at the time) and put it in a tank by itself, it never left the water. As for the glass pebbles, they're gonna be tough to keep clean, but other than that, they should be fine. So long as you're willing to work to keep them clean. ;)

You have my condolences. Just remember that it was not your care that harmed him, it was the conditions in the shop, or the wholesaler.

It's a shame that they are not available captive-bred yet

Sorry Emily. Hopefully this doesn't discourage you in the long run, try obtaining healthy captive bred newts with all their arms and digits from a reputable breeder in the future!

Wow. That's too bad. Wish we knew what had happened. I hate when an animal dies and you don't know why and aren't able to find out.
