Sick newt possible limb rot need help

It wasn’t the same type of infection as this. it had more respiratory stuff like nasal discharge and difficulty breathing. It was years ago but oral antibiotics did the trick. it occurred somewhat after a power outage in winter so my house went fairly cold without any cycling for the frogs, and I’m wondering if this was what started it, but some of them had symptoms long after the cold had ended. My green frogs got cloudy eyes in addition to the discharge and died, but my more northern species were fine

One of them actually had so much difficulty breathing it started actively squeaking right before it died. It was this terrible sound and you could tell he was suffering. i almost felt better that he died because at least he wasn’t in pain anymore

It wasn’t. He was one of my favorite frogs too. he was super tame. It was a terrible thing. I know he put a lot of work into raising that eft and I would hate for it to spread whatever it has to his marbled.

I honestly don’t know where you would get it other than a vet’s office. I could look up some stuff you might be able to find at CVS though. You would use a q tip and gently restrain him.

Make sure whatever you do get, that its amphibian safe. Obviously they wont have a label on there but if anything jumps out at you in the ingredient list then google it

It is amphibian safe too. On a quick google search it looks like people also recommend silver sulfadiazine as well. However, you may only be able to get this from a vet, so i would recommend starting with the neosporin, but I am not a vet and I do still recommend you take the eft to one if you can.

If it is on land you can try treating it topically once a day with triple antibiotic.

Infections of legs on a terrestrial individual, whatever caused by, must make suspect a problem with the substrate.
Trying to treat the symptoms without doing anything against the cause is often time lost.

The questions :
- Is the substrat old (a long time with the animals) ? Terrestrial substrates must be changed from time to time
- Is the substrate too dry or too wet or damp ? I acknowledge it can be difficult to answer, so let the newt answer : with a dry pole and a damp pole in the terrarium (with a slope and different elements like bark and stones), the newt can chose.
- Are there any dangerous animals with the newt (centipedes, spiders, non eaten crickets) ?

Is your newt alone in the terrarium or are there other efts newts which could develop the same problem if no improvement is done ?

It's just one but I did go a while without changing the substrate but I changed it couple days ago do you think that would fix the problem

Could be.
Now, think also to create more dry places.
I seriously doubt such wounds will heal in a constantly wet environment
(but perhaps you've already done this)

He has leaves now to stand on before he had sphagnum moss in his soil so you think if I make it dryer he will be fine

Your newt needs dry zones and wet zones in the tank, so that it can chose.
Then watch where your newt prefer to be

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
