Sick axolotl need help

i have amputated the leg and the axolotl has been alive for two hours now i am slowly rising the water temperature back up to normal. i managed to avoid cutting up against the body and the bleeding stopped after about 15 minutes i will report more as i go along
 
three and a half hours now he is swimming around in his little tank i am fairly confident he will make it
 
Whilst I can't condone your course of action, I would be a hypocrite to say that I haven't at least considered it myself, and I understand that your motivation was concern for your pet. Although the surgery appears to be a success you run a serious risk of infection and you need to be extremely careful to keep the wound clean. Do you have anything antibacterial which is safe for axolotls? I do believe the leg had to come off which I why I previously recommended you consult a vet - I'll recommend it again here - you may have only delayed the onset of septicemia/blood poisoning if you haven't removed all the infected flesh close to the shoulder. Good luck - hope he recovers OK...
 
yes i have consulted a couple of people they say the multicure is i am keeping him in is fine. and i wouldnt of cut the leg myself if i had any other choice. its been five hours
 
I can't imagine a veterinary consult for an Axolotl being absurdly expensive. I don't think I have ever paid more than $40 or so dollars (for cats and dogs) for a routine consult. If anything, it would have given you an idea of what was going on, or what the proper action was to take.
 
I dont think that leg looked bad enough to attempt a home amputation.
It just looked damaged and possibly already repairing. I would have given it a chance to repair itself or drop off itself, as this limb may never grow back with a full amputation.
Axolotls are amazing at repairing even broken and down to the bone limbs. albeit slightly wonky. Florence has a backwards back foot now after a chomp from the naughty Fred.

I'm glad he's still ok though, and i hope he makes it.

yes, vet are expensive but that is what we as responsible pet owners have to accept.......i had to take Larry to see a vet and it cost me $82.50 to walk in the examination room before the vet even looked at him.....while i understand money is tight these days, the reason vets are expensive is because they have the knowledge and training to deal with situations exactly like this one and are able to prevent things going horribly wrong with our beloved pets.........i hope everything turns out ok for your axie.

Last time we took an axie to the vet for an actual procedure it cost us over $300. Specialist vets are VERY expensive - I just want people to know that! The vet very kindly actually halved the bill from $600 because he used our Diglett as a 'test case' for lazer treatment!!!
 
hey melfly it may not have looked too bad in the pic but when i cut it off most of the leg was just bone and it was spreading further up it got visibly wosre over night even though he was fridged if i had waited another day it would have been to close to his body to cut off. it has been 32 hours and he seems ok no sign of infection or anything and i am giving him daily salt baths to reduce the chance of infection but the wound looks like it has sealed over
 
im glad your axie is doing well.........i couldnt have done what you did.........

yeah he is itching to get back into the big tank but i want to make sure there is no more of the infection first
