Should I...

Cheers Leah, at that much money I think it's worth the risk of buying, at least for me anyway!

1. it may heal to prove itself and axie (WIN)
2. it might be a rare morphing axie (WIN)
3. It might be a tiger which appears to be v. rare in Oz (WIN)
4. it might perish (LOSE)

LOL glad we don't have Cane toads here (at least I don't think we do). Also glad Mary is down there to keep them under control...roflmao...my what a reaction!

My boyfriend's reaction was about the same as Mary's lol, till he looked at it a little better and decided that it just MIGHT not be a cane toad after all. Tow possibilities I've come up with are the giant pobblebonk, and the giant burrowing frog, just based on pictures I've found online.

The only thing stopping me at this point is the toad/frog, because if she does end up morphing, I won't have anywhere to put her!

ok, i just posted in the pic gallery - but i'll say it again, it is not a cane toad, it is infact a frog - a pobblebonk i think.

let the frog go - it can look after itself, put it in a garden or park or somthing and let it be. That axi needs a loving home!!!!

On that "loving home" subject, have you thought about a trip to Queensland?

Thanks Mary, I thought it might be a pobblebonk. What are the glands on their back legs for? Beautiful frog... I'd love to keep frogs again one day when I'm better prepared, now I just hope this one will stay off the road! I'm glad I rescued it, the city's no place for a frog!

As for the axie, I won't put her in with Falkor for quite a while in case she is sick, but do you think I should give her 50/50 land/water areas to start, or just lower the water level a whole heap and give her a rock or something to get out of the water with? This is still IF I do get her, but now that I won't be keeping any illegal toads at home, I would have room for her...

No trips to Queensland planned as of now, but I want to see the country, and the bf finishes Uni in less than a month...

Dot- how long did it take for your tiger to morph? And how long does it usually take to see signs of regrowth in the gills, if she is a normal axolotl?
I'm worried that if she is morphing that I won't be able to take care of her properly. Is there any special care they need while they morph? After? She'd need land, obviously, but what else? Does the diet change any? Do I just treat a morphed axolotl like a tiger?

Leah, Regrowth should show within days, if its going to happen. If it is morphing, you'll need to provide somewhere to get out of the water, (usually land with a waterdish suffices after they've morphed). The diet is precisely the same, EARTHWORMS! Morphed axies are just like morphed tigers, but are more sensitive to disease and other things.

Leah --

1.) If I were in your position (about the toad,) I'd keep it anyway because I like saying "pobblebonk."

2.) I'd only had my tiger for about a month when she started morphing. If memory serves, it took her two-two and a half weeks to completely go through her change.

When I noticed Ash's gills receding, I lowered the water level in her tank and added a little podium. (I made sure that the water level was even with the top of her little island.) She didn't eat hardly at all while she was changing, (at the time I was feeding her sinking shrimp pellets and I think she ate only 3 or 4 before she became 100% terrestrial.) Here's a picture of the ghetto-fabulous set-up I prepared for Ash on the fly.

She'd climbed up on the little deli box all by herself so I quickly snapped that pic.

I kept her in that set-up for 5-7 days, then when her gills began to recede to little nubbins, I set her up in a fully terrestrial tank with a water bowl deep enough for her to submerge in.
21515.jpg

She stayed like that for a couple more days, and after about a week, she was snapping at small crickets and a day later, nightcrawlers I'd cut in half.

Now she's a pig.

She eats 2 whole nightcrawlers every two days.

Leah,

I would go for it. Then you may have a wonderful friend for Falkor or if she does morph you may beable to send her over to Mary, she seems very keen!

I'd get her!

its illegal to keep frogs in AUS without a permit..pobblebonks are great frogs..the FATS group (frog and tadpole study group)in NSW had an article on people killing native frogs thinking they were cane toads, congrats on doing the right thing Leah!

K, I just got home from work, so I'm going to release the frog and I think go get the axie! I'd probably keep the frog if I'd caught it as a tadpole Dot, but it's already grown up wild and it seems kind of sad to put it in a tank after that.
Here's the frog for anyone who hadn't seen:

Cpr/Mary, are pobblebonks common in Australia? I can hear frogs all around at night, but this is the first one I've actually seen! Do you know what the glands on the back legs are for? Poison of some kind?

I think I'll try a large rubber bin with an airstone and an upsidedown pot for the axie to start. Sound ok? I haven't seen any regrowth of her gills, and I've been looking at her for a couple weeks now, so who knows what's going on! If she does regrow the gills, how long should I give her in quarantine before introducing her to Falkor? She is bigger, but it's his tank and his territory already, so hopefully he won't take any bullying!

got her

Here's a better pic of the gills:

She's gone spotty now, something I hadn't noticed, but maybe it's been the light in the store all along hiding the speckles.

I really hope she does well in her new home

hm, i think those gills will grow back. if they were shrinking, they'd be little pointy things as far as i know. they look like they've been bitten off to me.

nah pobblebonks arent that common anymore in AUS, i think theyre becoming endangered..im not too sure about the glands, theyre definately not poisonous though. If im right the only poisonous amphibian in AUS is a Cane Toad..Green Tree Frogs can excrete a white fluid from their glands on their head..although its not harmful to us..as long as we dont rub it in our eyes lol..

Hope this helped a little bit :S

After seeing the gills, I'm a little more inclined to say she's morphing. Into what, I don't know, either axie or tiger, but her gills don't look nibbled, they just look shrunken. Once they're past a certain point of morphing, the gills (Ash's anyway,) will start to round off and look sort of stumpy. They won't flay out from the sides of her head anymore.

Looking back at the other picture, her legs are a little meatier than Falkor's, (another sign that they're ready to hop up on land.)

Has the pet store clerk said she's been eating much? Generally a morphing tiger/axie will stop eating, getting sustenance from absorbing its gills/tail ridge.

I tend to disagree Dot they look damaged not shrinking. The reduction is quite different on both sides. Either way it will be interesting to find out.
Perhaps we should lay bets on the outcome...any takers?

The store owner said she'd been eating well, but they also only feed them every third day, so I don't know if that really gives an accurate indication of her appetite. She had two teeny earthworms last night (there are a lot less worms in the bucket since I had the frog in there...) and this morning there were what looked like mealworm shells in the water with her poop, along with two small pieces of gravel.

She's got some pieces of slate in her tub that are below the water level, and a large flat rock that comes slightly above the water in case she wants to get out. She hasn't been up out of the water, but she goes on the slate and when she rests there part of her head is out of the water. Camera battery is charging, but I'll try and get a pic later!

Consider me officially puzzled. You seem to have an aximander. And that's my final answer.

Leah, my axies like to rest ontop of the plants with their back/top of head out of the water. But their gills are huge, so I'm sure thats not a good indication. Just keep her cool, well fed and well aerated.

I guess we'll just have to sit and wait!

I like the term aximander wonder if we could get one to breed with a morpholotl
