I was looking on the web this morning and found this species listed for sale. Hefty price on the little guy. I cruised the forum and only found one other post on the S. bernardezi from '05.

It's listed as a Spanish fire salamander. The previous post stated these are illegal to have in the pet trade. Anyone have any additional information?

The asking price is $299 usd.

Just curious, I'm not too keen on the illegal pet trade.

All European Salamandra are protected by Appendix III of the Bern Convention as well as many local laws. Therefore any European fire salamanders collected for trade are illegal. Of course that doesn't stop unscrupulous people collecting them and once the animals get to the US no-one seems to care about their origins.

If the ad states '05 that might imply they were captive bred. A cb juvenile bernardezi in the UK would retail at around £40, so yes, $299 is a little steep. I'm sure someone will pay it though.

Anyway, it is not a species, but a subspecies of Salamandra salamandra. And over here in Europe this subspecies has been captive bred regularly, especially in Germany as they do very well in outdoor surroundings.
But this is a fine example of how these type of pet traders work, try to get something that seems exclusive and sell it for whatever a fool is willing to pay. That's is how these people make money. It is sad for the animals.
