Hi there!
So this is my first salamander ive ever owned and im pretty sure hes starting his metamorphosis. His tail fin thing has started to receed and his gills are starting to shorten.I think hes even shedding.
Anyway, i wanted to leave him the ability to swim as much as he can for as long as possible but I wanted to know if there are some exact signs that means he needs land.
He is currently housed in a 10g tank and its currently the only one i have so i will have to use it for his terrestrial tank.at least temporarily.Granted he has been laying at the bottom of the tank but I just dont want to be too sudden.
Can he go onto land when he still has his gills and fin?or is it when hes comletely finished his morph?
Id greatly appreciate any help!

He can choose on his own. Just put something in the tank, a decoration or something, high enough for him to haul out on.

And he wont try and immediatley start burrowing will he?I can definitley put something in there to climb onto but i know sometimes they wont come out if they feel like its unhabital. I was just planning on lowering the water and putting in a large piece of land that he can climb onto but then it means he wont be able to swim as much as he can now. Is there like a specific sign he needs land immedietly?

Just leave some stuff sticking above the water that he can crawl out onto. He'll start to spend part of his time breathing air, and the other part of his time breathing water. As soon as you notice him being out of the water like all the time it's time to move him to a land enclosure with a large-ish shallow water area.

Good luck! :D

So I havent got any time to go buy something that would be a nice decoration and allow him to climb out on but ive got some foam like stuff that floats and will hold his weight. Hes also got about 3 large plants that can hold his weight if he sits on them which ive seen him doing. I hope itll suffice until I can find time to get him something else. Ill also include some pics of my little guy.:D

He's definitely looking like an adult! Watch for those gill nubs to recede.

And try not to be alarmed if he stops eating for a time. This is normal. Morphing is a stressful time.

His eating habits have kinda surprised me because I know its common they wont eat during his change but he still eats everything i offer. Hes been getting half a nightcrawler every 3 days and I expected him to quit eating them but hes still snapping them right up. Ive also noticed him taking gulps of air from the surface so thats good too. I just cant wait till he finally crawls outta the water:D

If he's eating, you might want to increase his food a little, maybe every other day, just to get him fattened up a little before morphing.

I definitley will now! I was worried about overfeeding him or making him sick. I went through that mishap and felt horrible but ill give him some more tomorrow. thanks for the advice!!

I just looked over at my little guys tank and he had his head outta the water:D first time i ever saw him do that, very excited! I hope he decides to leave the water soon

Congrats :D It's fun and exciting to watch them slowly leave the water, isn't it? :p

So much fun. I just wish he'd come out so I can freak out all over that:D

So I went in to class today and when I got back my mom was freaking out because apparently jasper crawled outta the water. I have it set up with like a pool like dish i bought and filled it with some of the substrate im going to use and he had climbed out and burrowed right into it. If he continues to stay in it im going to move him to a completely terrestrial tank

Does he still have gill nubs? Looks like it won't be long now!

From what I can see its no distinct nub more like a large bump where they used to be. I havent seen him go in the water all day but if he doesnt go in by the end of tomorrow ill probably switch his tanks

How exciting!

Any thoughts on how you're going to set up the new tank?

Im not totally positive yet but Im thinking that im going to just use a basic setup until I think up something more creative. Im going to use the pool like dish for water he can go into and put some plants and moss in with rocks so he can climb in and out of the pool. I was thinking that I have this cylindrical cave like thing and I might bury it in his substrate so he can climb in there while being hidden.

Hi again,
I am pretty sure Jasper is getting ready to completely leave the water and is constantly in on the land. I was wondering if my substrate is right tho. I got Exo Terra forest moss but I also have some extra bricks of bed a beast. Which one would be the best?Ive noticed he keeps trying to get as far in the substrate as he can but is kind of having problems.maybe because its not very deep?

Use a mix of topsoil and bed-a-beast. Mix it half and half. He wants to burrow, so you should give him around 5-6 inches of substrate.
