My local water has a high pH, about 7.5 degrees of hardness, and above 15 gh, these are optimal conditions for keeping newts
I try to lose at least gh?
That pH is ok since triturus prefer alkaline waters than acid. And remember that when the water goes to your setup it will tend to become acid trough time. The water that I use is 7.5 too and after 2 weeks in a setup full of wooden things the water goes to 6.5~7.0. If you have a already cycled tank you don't have much to worry about. I don't understand much about water hardness but never heard issues about that in newt setups.
my water is also hard and alkaline (pH 7.6). My water, however, tends to become more alkaline over time, probably due to plant photosynthesis. When it approaches pH 8, I do a water change. So far, the newts haven't complained though.
T. cristatus in the UK are usually associated with high pH (7.0-8.0) and hard water. Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire all have very good population of T. cristatus, and much of this area has tap water of >16 dGH:
