I am curious if people are breeding these outside of zoos. At some point in the future I want to get some. I like the idea of a newt that doesn't mind being warm.

N. meridionalis is not in private collections legally to my knowledge. It is listed as endangered on the IUCN red list and is a state threatened species in Texas.

The private trade missed the boat on them before restrictions were put in place.

Yes. Sadly, it's a general feature : when a species is threatened, the first, and often only law for conservation is against collection, even if the main cause is another factor.

From Amphibiaweb :
"The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department currently lists black-spotted newts as Endangered, and specimens are protected from collection. Despite this, and the fact that black-spotted newts occur in the United States only in Texas, these animals have no Federal listing status. Continued land clearing for agriculture and urban development pose the greatest threats to these salamanders."

Also curious about this one... should be an ideal aquarium newt if it lives in Florida, Texas and Mexico... (according to AmphibiaWeb - Notophthalmus meridionalis and Notophthalmus meridionalis (Cope, 1880))

Can't some uni students get a special permit to breed them?

What does a listing in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species mean exactly? That the species can't be picked up from nature? (I assume so) .. ...

I assume chances are very low but what if there's some person in Mexico out there who already owns these? Would the listing restrict trade and export?

Came across this old post. So there once was a zoo that had them, but I have no information on what became of those... .... .... going to ask them!
