Northern CA Salamander Photos

Hi All,

We've had some great rain in Napa County recently, and it has sparked a bunch of salamander
action. These photos were taken in the last ten days. The Aneides lugubris were great. A few nights ago, around half past
midnight, we found three big adults running around the base of two old oak trees. First time I had
encountered that many adults completely out of their holes at the same time so close to one another.

We picked two of them up for a closer look, and once we put them back they climbed right up one of the oaks until they were out of sight.

And the Taricha torosa just keep breeding like crazy, day and night. The ponds and creeks are filling
with the little hard balls of Taricha egg masses.

Hey Mike, wonderful Californian animals.

I've never been able to find Aneides lugubris (found Ensatinas, Tarichas, and even Dicamptodon). Nice to know that they're out there somewhere though.

*shakes fist at Aneides population.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
