Play sand and pool filter sand should be examined with a magnet to detect
the presence of magnetite, a magnetic iron ore.
If an excess of particles stick to the magnet, the sand should not be used, as iron
can cause health problems in amphibians.
Water conditioners will be completely ineffective on sand which had viable shards of ferrous materials showing up on a magnet. The sand will need to be removed entirely, if this is the case.
Today I ran a magnet over the entire bed of sand in the tank and there was not a thing stuck to it! I wish I would have known there was a potential issue earlier but I'm glad everything is okay!
I just got some media from my girlfriends tank and put it in mine to hopefully speed up the cycling process! I also finally got my homemade sponge filter hooked up and running and it's working great!
I was wondering about how close my tank was to being cycled. Ammonia was at 1ppm and Nitrite was either .25-.5ppm. It's been in the cycling process for about two weeks now so should I expect it to finish around the third week or will it take longer than that?
