Beautiful, wonderful tank, photos and axies.
Thanks Zoe!
But I am slightly heartbroken to notice that you've lost the tropical purple lights!! (You PM'd me about them, if you remember?)..I was unable to get the right size purple lights to fit my tank's hood, so got some purple theatre light's filters and put them over my tank lights and finally, FINALLY, got the purple I was after....though I struggle to take pics of it, because the flash bleaches it out...
I couldn't get the purple toned tube for the four-foot tank
Clever thinking with the theatre filters!
If you're struggling with the flash my best suggestion would be put your camera on a tripod (or desk/chair/table/whatever if you haven't got a tripod), turn off the flash and crank up the exposure time a bit - most cameras will let you do this, even point-and-shooters.
This way, you'll get all of the woderful colours the tank has to offer and none of the ugly white glare caused by the flash.
Speaking of which, do you have some sort of magical camera made of unicorn's horns and pixie's tears, because you seem to forever get these spectacular, un-human-like shots....almost as if you yourself were an axolotl and lived amonst them and gained their trust....
It's just an idea I'm throwing around.
I am, in fact, some sort of previously undiscovered amphibious caudate with image-recording eyes...
Nah, I use a Nikon D90, a tripod, a remote shutter release and a 18-105mm zoom lens. The key to success with these kinds of pictures is (a) no flash, (b) long exposures (up to 15 seconds or more for some of them) and (c) patience - they love to move JUST before the shutter closes and ruin the whole shot!
Wow that's a cool looking tank. What are those grasslike plants called?
Thanks! The grasses are mostly Lilaeopsis, but there's a couple of other randoms - Micro Swords and Pongol Swords (which is just Mondo grass, I don't recommend these as they're not true aquatics, they only survive immersed, they don't actually grow).
