New tank- filter or no filter?

I have planted my tank now, this is an image of it a few weeks ago. I now have a load more Elodea and a Java Fern.

I have extra filters in all of my "messy" tanks (axolotls and dwarf puffer tanks) for several reasons. It's useful if a filter breaks.....when I set up a new tank I can either use media from a spare filter, or even just use a spare filter.....if I need to set up a quarantine tank I've got a filter I can use.....at the moment all the plants are silk, so no help with waste products....
I have 10 tanks on the go at the moment, so a filter problem can be quite an issue, and I like to have a few spare.
I'm sure it's absolutely unnecessary, but it makes me feel comfortable, and the axolotls don't seem to mind.

Nice tank Chris.
I plan to plant my tanks over the next few months, so I'd be interested to see some pictures of your tanks progress.

I've never put real plants in my tanks before as I've always had fish munch on them haha. What are the best suited plants for axolotls? I've only got a couple fake ones... I set my tank up yesterday and want to add some real plants instead of fake ones (bit worried they may hurt their little gills which is why I tried to place them away from the main areas (e.g outside of my little tube) . Ordered a new filter to put into the tank as I'm not sure i like the type that's in there .... Thank you Donna for your reasoning on your extra filters, I never thought of it that way, although it makes perfect sense !

Here's a pic of my tank that is going to sit empty for a while as it cycles :dizzy::errr:

Oh I forgot to say, my rocks in my tank a pebbles bigger than an axies head ... I know tiny pebbles are a big no no as I don't want them swallowing any

Personally I wouldn't go with pebbles like that. They trap dirt making it harder to clean, and I don't think they look that nice. Also, they maybe bigger that the head now, but an adult Axolotl could potentially try to ingest one of those:

I'd go with sand substrate or bare bottom.

If your looking for plants there are lots of threads discussing plants, or there is some good information here: Axolotl Sanctuary

Thanks Chris, they must look pretty small in the picture !
I used to have black sand in my previous tank. Will look into possibly putting sand again somewhere. Also thank you for the plant like, I'll have a look now
