I got my Christmas present early!

It looks quite bare at the moment, but I'm hoping to put in some more plastic plants and some pvc pipes so Stella has more places to hide.

I was considering making it a Japanese theme, with some nice ornaments etc. What do you think?

Do you think the background looks tacky? I'm undecided...

It's still a bit cloudy at the moment, because it's just started cycling, but hopefully it will be clear in a couple more days.

Hi casey!! it looks great! can't wait for it to cycle and see stella in it! it's very tall! the sand looks much nicer. I wonder why we cant find any finer stuff. oh well. are you artistic at all? some people make their own backdrop which is great cause you can make new ones all the time for next to nothing! the only thing is that I would be careful with that thermometer. apparently if they break the contents can hurt or kill your axolotl. I have a digital one and it converts to farenheit, great for the forum. oxox good luck!

Mel, where did you get your thermometer from? I've taken that one out now and I'll put a new one in when I can find a plastic one.

I am creative, but not really artistic. I might get my boyfriend to do something - he'll like to have some input.

I got the sand from Mentone Aquarium. I could probably have gotten finer stuff from a garden centre - they have washed sand, but I kind of like the tank looking beachy. I think the sand was actually from Seaford beach - because it was packed there.

Did you get sand yet? Do you know if you can get floating islands in australia? I'm thinking of getting one to cut down the water current flow a bit.

yeah I'm not sure about the islands, but I saw a guy (im sure you've seen it) in here who has a floating log with a plant growing off it (into the air) and the roots in the water, such a lovely idea. looks great! I got my thermometer from the vic market aquarium. $9.00 I think. it's great. they have these great ones that you can set to go of when you need to do water changes and cheack levels and heaps of stuff I can't remember. oh! thats right, you can set how high or low the temp should be and the alarm goes of if i goes over or under it! that was about 30 bucks though. what a great christmas pressie! I'll write you a ful email but just off to do something! oxox p.s I think the beachy look is great! can't wait to see what you do with it!

Thanks Mel! I'll have a look at the Vic market, and maybe my aquarium too, I got the glass thermometer from Chapel st, so I haven't actually looked in the Mentone one yet.

I haven't seen the floating log idea. Do you remember whose it is? I'd like to have a look at it, in case I can't find a floating island.

Hey! I really like the round edges on that tank! I like the tank set-up, very nice, the sand is very natural and looks soft

I think your little axie will be very happy in their ^___^

Thanks, Rheann!

I'm going to get some PVC pipes this weekend and maybe some ornaments, plants and river rocks, too. What sort of ornaments are safe/unsafe to put in an axie aquarium?

I've seen some that are ceramic, I think, and they have some sort of glaze on them - the aquarium I go to uses them in their tanks but who knows whether they're right in doing so?

the water has cleared a lot now and looks much better.

The temperature is at about 23c at the moment - I've got bottles freezing at the moment - I've got to work out how long it takes them to melt so that I can get a grip on the changeovers, before Stella moves in!

i tend to stay away from things that have paint on them just because it can chip off. resin items are aquarium safe as long as they dont have sharp edges. ceramic pots are also fine, no need to glaze as long as they are from chemical free places, ie pet shops not garden centres

I have some new additions...

What do you think? The rocks are red rocks, from central Australia, I think. and the bowl is a plastic feeding bowl.

I've kept it simple. There were so many beautiful resin ornaments that had hiding holes in them but they had so many sharp edges - I think it would be very dangerous for an axie trying to get out of those holes.

sorry about the flash in these pics.

Would love to hear your comments!

I think it's gorgeous. You might also want to try PVC tubes (drinking-water safe), which you find at home-improvement stores. For 30cents (american), you can pick up a great little hide.

hi casey that look great! hope stella gets to see it soon! how goes the cycling?
