New California Academy of Sciences building

Yesterday, I was at the new CA Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park. Here is a photo of a caudate I found there. I thought its enclosure was a bit small with no place for the giant to hide, but it was cool to see. First one for me. They also had a lesser siren and a bunch of frogs. Overall, I thought it was a pretty neat place.

And a mossy frog for fun.

Great photos, Pete. Any idea of the Andrias is Japanese or Chinese? How big was it?

Mossy frogs are so... cool looking. If I ever branch out into keeping frogs, they're at the top of the list!

That's pretty awesome. Good photos too. Here in MN I know of zero caudate displays after they moved the Necturus off display at the Como Zoo.

I love Theloderma corticale. I swear that one day I will own some of those frogs.

It was Chinese. As for size I'd say it was about 3 feet (but that's a total guess, because I couldn't see it's head). It's tail was about a foot at least.

I had heard that the Cal Academy had opened its new location. Nice to see photos of it. Seeing the Andrias is like seeing an old acquaintance; I spent quite a while watching this same animal when I was there. Here are my old photos of him/her and some other amphibs they had on display at that time:

Hey cool. I didn't see any other caudates, but the Andrias and Siren. I tried to hit every exhibit, but of course I could have missed one. The place is ridiculously crowded and popular at the moment, so perhaps the masses of young children hid a tank or two from me.

Unlike your experience, neither the Andrias or Siren were very active, but I did watch them for awhile hoping for something. The Andrias moved it's right back foot once about a half a centimeter, but that was the only action I got. I even returned before leaving, and they still hadn't appreciably moved.
