New and considering Axie

Sam 77 do you think it will be easier cycling with Axie if it's a little guy? Or harder? The ones I'm looking at are only 3".

If the filter is dry the bacteria will be dead, even if it is wet they need an ammonia source to keep them alive, so you will probably need to start from scratch. I would scrape all the algae etc off the tank, fill it up with whatever substrate you are using and dechlorinated water, then put your filter on and make sure it is all working before you get your axie. Test you water for pH, nitrite, ammonia and nitrate so you have a base to start from. Then test water and change 20% every day if needed. I don't know if it will be easier with a smaller one, as they are quite messy, but someone more experienced will probably be able to help you with that. Be prepared for the tank to take several months to cycle. If you can get a few live plants that might help.

Also meant to say you will need to feed smaller ones more often, so they will produce more waste.

there are people on this site will jump down my throat for saying this but if you really in the position of not knowing when you will get another buy it i would use a large plastic tote while you cycle the tank it would be easier to do water changes without stressing your axolotl.
while the tank is cycling read read and READ up on there care then oh and if you know someone with a fish tank use there filter water and seed your tank
i am a total newbie and understand where your coming from
hope that made sense

I think I'm going to hold off for now. This is way more complicated than I had thought. (I've owned fish on and off for years and never had this much trouble, and they were always very healthy). I will likely get Axies in the future as I'm very interested in them but maybe this summer..or something. When time and income are more available.
